My 2.5 year old is diagnosed with level 2 autism

My 2.5 year old son was recently diagnosed with autism (Level 2), and honestly I’m just looking to hear from parents who’ve been through something similar.

He’s been in speech therapy since age 2 and we’ve seen a lot of improvement recently. He’s starting to imitate words more and communicate more. The main things they said he struggles with are joint attention, taking turns, and functional communication.

What confuses us is that he doesn’t really show many of the other signs people commonly associate with autism. He’s very social, affectionate, flexible with routines, and doesn’t have sensory sensitivities or repetitive behaviors. To us, the speech delay seems to be the biggest thing.

We’re getting him reassessed in the future because we’re wondering if it could be more of a developmental delay, but in the meantime I’d really love to hear from parents whose kids were similar.

Did speech improve over time? Did you do ABA or OT? What do your kids look like now as they got older?

As first-time parents, this has honestly been overwhelming and scary, and I think I just need real-life experiences instead of reading endless articles online.

Thank you ❤️
