The reaction to Ed's death in e4/e5 makes no sense. In the universe of FAM space travel is far more important than it is in ours. When Neil Armstrong died it was national news. Ed dying would have been a far bigger deal than portrayed in the show. Ed is the greatest astronaut of all time. In the universe of FAM he is the most influential astronaut in the history of space travel, at least for his feats as an astronaut and apart of NASA. A table memorial that is equivalent to what a high school janitor would get upon their passing does not do him justice. This would have been a massive ordeal. He would have had his body taken to earth, had a massive funeral procession, a speech given by NASA, etc. Just because of his actions in s4 his accomplishments far overshadow that. I think that was a huge miss by the writers. Granted Ed was my favorite character and he is the best character in the entire show (argue with a wall), however I just think contextually his death would have been a far bigger deal to the people on mars and earth.
