Whenever the player hits a target, they deal some amount of knockback. However, no matter which item they use to hit, they always deal the same amount of knockback, unless they have the Knockback enchantment or sprint before hitting the target.

However, realistically, a heavier weapon would deal significantly more knockback than a light one. So I think it would be a nice touch to differentiate knockback based on the weapon used. I think a good idea would be to have the following values:

  • Sword and Hoe: 100%
  • Axe and Pickaxe: 110%
  • Spear, Trident, Shovel: 120%
  • Mace: 150%

Where 100% is the normal knockback without Enchantments nor sprinting (1.552 blocks). I think this would help differentiate weapons and tools a little bit more

Minecraft's combat system has a rough story and the playerbase is still divided on how it should be treated.

On one hand we have 1.8-, the old combat where there was no cooldown on weapons, no Shields and no Armor Toughness; on the other, we have 1.9+ with attack speed that determines damage, Shields and Armor Toughness as well as every new weapon added to the game (Tridents, Crossbows, Mace, Spears), Crystal-PvP, Elytras and more.

Then we have the experimental combat snapshots released by Jeb six years ago which attempted to bridge the gap between the two systems, but were never finished, never made it to an official update and are largely forgotten, while still not resolving all the problems.

So the problem of the combat is still largely unresolved, leaving people making their own ideas on how to update it or make it more interesting.

So, how would you change the combat so that it's better than both 1.8 and 1.9 combat?

A common idea is to allow Blaze Rods to be shot from Crossbows and making them set the target ablaze.

However I haven't seen anyone suggest Breeze Rods to be used, and since Blaze Rods would give fire, Breeze Rods would give high knockback, comparable to a Punch bow (maybe even more since you'd use ammunition rather than simply have an Enchantment) since Wind Charges give knocback too.
