Tonsillectomy Recovery (Positive)

Please don’t let social media scare you when it comes to a tonsillectomy recovery. Everyone’s body, pain tolerance, healing journey, and experience are completely different. I went into surgery terrified after reading so many horror stories online, but honestly, my experience was very positive overall and my pain was very manageable.

Of course there were uncomfortable moments and harder days, but staying on top of hydration, medication, rest, and listening to my body made a huge difference. Recovery is not one size fits all, and sometimes the internet mainly highlights the worst-case experiences.

If you’re considering a tonsillectomy, don’t automatically panic. For me, it was absolutely doable, and I’m genuinely glad I went through with it. Below is my personal recovery experience day by day in hopes it helps someone feel a little less anxious going into theirs.

Day 0 (Surgery Day):
I’m a 32 year old female, and this was my first surgery ever, so I was definitely nervous going into it.

I had my surgery April 30,2026 at 2:30 PM in Mississauga, Ontario. When I woke up, my throat was still numb and honestly, I felt a little sore but great. No real pain at all.

However, I stayed on top of everything right away:

Took my pain meds (hydromorphone) every 4 hours
Set alarms to drink water every hour (even overnight)
Slept on a wedge pillow with a humidifier on
Also had pedialytes freezer pops to stay extra hydrated

In addition, I used a baby toothbrush to gently brush my teeth, which helped me feel a bit more normal.

Overall, Day 0 was surprisingly smooth and honestly gave me a lot of hope.

Day 1 (May 1,2026): Still trying to stay positive, but definitely felt a shift today.

Brushed my teeth again and showered (felt AMAZING mentally). Swallowing and talking started to hurt more. Kept up with hourly hydration. Managed a few sips of a protein shake and had some mashed potatoes around 2 PM.

Energy was really low, so I stayed in bed most of the day and barely talked.

Pain level: 2/10 when just resting. Much higher when swallowing or talking (4/10, this was the hardest part of the day)

It’s manageable, especially if you stay on top of meds and hydration. The biggest thing I’m noticing is that it’s not constant pain, it’s mostly triggered by swallowing/talking.

Trying to stay ahead of it and take it one day at a time. I’ve heard days 3–5 can be tougher, so mentally preparing for that but staying hopeful.

Day 2 (May 2,2026): Woke up with a swollen tongue which made everything feel more uncomfortable. Around lunchtime, pain peaked at about a 4/10 so I used an ice pack which helped a bit. I had a protein shake and some mashed potatoes earlier in the day.

Around 4 PM, I started to feel really nauseous, so I had yogurt before taking my pain meds, which helped. Still no bowel movement since surgery, so I took something to help with that.

By the end of the night, I developed a fever, which was uncomfortable but manageable.

Day 3, (May 3,2026): Had a fever all morning. Overall, the day was okay, but the evening was rough. Pain was still 3-4/10.

Around 4 PM, the pain became sharp and started radiating into my head and teeth. I realized I might have dropped a pain pill earlier, so that could have made things worse. I added Tylenol around 5:30 PM which helped a bit.

Important note: banana REALLY irritated my throat, would not recommend. Sticking to freezer pops, ice, and mashed potatoes felt way better. You can also make a banana shake which incudes banana and protein shake.

Still no bowel movement. At this point I had taken about 5 stool softeners and drank fiber drinks, but nothing yet (passing gas though).

Day 4 (May 4,2026): Woke up and brushed my teeth using a baby toothbrush (honestly one of the best tips I got so far). My breath was pretty bad, which I’ve heard is normal during healing so I tried gently rinsing my mouth with lukewarm salt water (about 1/2 tsp salt in water). I didn’t gargle, just lightly swished it around, and it actually helped a lot.

Mornings are still the hardest part of the day. Even though I’ve been waking up every hour overnight to drink water, everything feels super dry and tight when I first wake up.

I also started noticing some cramping in my upper legs and calves, which I’m guessing is from not moving around much the past few days.

Around 2 AM, I woke up in a lot of pain, probably around a 6/10. It was hard to even get Tylenol down. The pain came and went throughout the day, but overall it was manageable.

Got a slight headache so I made rice with mashed potatoes, added salt and yogurt and eat it around 6 PM. Honestly tested really good and got rid of my headache.

Day 5 (May 5,2026): Woke up with a slight ache in my throat this morning, but overall I felt pretty good compared to the last few days. Definitely noticing some improvement now.

Throughout the day, things felt more manageable. I did a bit too much talking, so my throat started aching more by the evening, but it was still tolerable. Pain today was around a 4/10.

Still staying on top of hydration, meds, and soft foods. Hoping this means I’m slowly turning the corner.

Day 6 (May 6,2026): Pain in mouth and ear pain began today. Couldn’t talk too much all day. Alot of ice packs required. Toward the end of the night, got slightly better. Around 5/10 today.

Day 7 (May 7,2028): Pain peaked in the morning but settled throughout the day. Overall, I was doing really well until I ate a banana, which surprisingly irritated my throat again. I was also severely constipated from the pain meds, and after trying multiple things (including Ex-Lax) with no success, I decided to go for reflexology as a form of self care and in hopes it might help. Surprisingly, within 24 hours, I finally had a bowel movement. Pain today was around 2/10.

Day 8 (May 8,2026): Pain was worst in the morning, so I took pain medication at 8 AM, but after that I didn’t need anything again until around 7 PM. I was feeling much stronger today and decided to try eating a cheeseburger. It actually felt great to eat real food again, but I think it irritated my throat because I woke up from a nap feeling swollen and ended up taking another painkiller. Despite that, pain was still only around 2/10 overall. I definitely feel like I’m finally heading toward the healing stage. Also finally had a proper bowel movement after many failed attempts, which honestly made me feel a lot better overall.

Day 9 (May 9, 2026): Pain has definitely reduced, but it still peaks randomly if I eat too much or talk too much. Overall though, things continue to heal and improve each day. I also reduced my painkillers to only as needed and ended up taking just two today.

Day 10 (May 10, 2026): Honestly, today felt smooth. I was able to eat pretty normally and had no major complaints. I continued only taking painkillers as needed and again only took two all day. Definitely starting to feel more like myself again.
