Can I get stoned 2 weeks after tonsillectomy?

So I recently got a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy done, and I’ve been holding off for quite a while now. I was wondering if, when my doctor clears me to do things again, could I go back to using? And by using, I mean using a cart, not smoking if that makes a difference.

What to drink after surgery

Hi, I am getting surgery on Wednesday and I am unsure on what to stock up on. Will I be able to drink flavoured water (lemon+lime/apple+blackcurrant/mango)?? Also, what about diluting juice/cordial? Or will I have to stick to plain water?

bleeding episode

last night (day 8) i had around a mouthful of blood come out but it stopped after gargling iced water and the ENT on call told me to go to the ER if the bleeding started again.

no bleeding (around 12 hours) since then but just a bit paranoid. anyone with a similar experience have any advice?

Already one of the best decisions I've ever made

I had my surgery in early may and am fully healed as of a couple weeks ago. I got my tonsils out because of chronic tonsillitis for almost a year which had an intense impact on my body and wellbeing. I was getting infections every three weeks on the dot and antibiotics never did much except ruin my gut biome. I also would get infections any time I got the flu or a common cold.

I have now gotten sick for the first time since before my surgery, and the difference is insane. Being able to struggle through a normal cold or flu rather than having to deal with an infection on top of illness is truly amazing. Obviously being sick isn't a fun experience but compared to what I was going through this past year, this is infinitely more manageable.

Over the next six months or so I will get an even better sense of the effects of removing my tonsils, and being sick, but I am very hopeful and optimistic about my future illnesses.

When can you talk normally like before the surgery?

It's day 12 and I still can't talk properly at all without it hurting and sounding off..

How do I know when I’m “in the clear” to go back to normal life?

Currently on day 11. I’ve had a pretty easy recovery compared to most people on here although the first 4 days were brutal. After that, on day 5, I woke up with minimal pain and it’s been smooth riding since. The scabs on my tonsil beds are slowly but surely fading away, and I’ve started to slowly go back to a mostly normal diet. I’m a pretty active guy and like to workout and do other things but I’m hesitant to push myself because I’ve made it this far and couldn’t imagine restarting if I were to bleed. What are some things to look for that sort of signal I’m good to go back to everyday life? Thanks and happy 4th of July 🇺🇸!

Happy story for those in need

Hello fellow tonsil-less or almost tonsil-less people

I 28F wanted to share my success story to those about to get a tonsillectomy that not everyone lives in a horror movie for a month. I was so scared pre-surgery and something like this would have comforted me a lot, so I hope to help someone else <3

Long post incoming thanks for reading my rambling thoughts:

All of this started with mono in 2015. Ever since then I've dealt with chronic tonsillitis that has greatly affected my quality of life. School, work, and social life all took major hits constantly because I was always sick. Always sick. And it was always because of my tonsils, and they weren’t even classified as too large.

It was like every fucking week I could feel my tonsils swell and I would think here we go again. shortly after the first food of my day everyday I would spike a fever because my tonsils were irritated by the food.

I put off the surgery for years because I was horrified of the recovery process. But now I'll be starting a master's program in the fall that basically has a 100% attendance expectation, so I knew that I absolutely had to do a tonsillectomy before the program, couldn't get around it.

Let me also preface this with I'm a big cry baby when it comes to pain so I was terrified going into the OR. Sobbing so much that the surgeon had to talk to me for 5 minutes to make sure that I really wanted to go through with this lol.

Morning of Fri June 26 the surgery itself was quick, when I woke up I was uncomfortable, but they gave me a quick tylenol drip and then I was on my way home. Felt fine enough to go for a stroll and sit at a patio cafe outside my house.

The first few days were uncomfortable but it was moreso annoying than anything. The thing that bothered me the most was actually my tongue. Nobody warned me about the tongue pain. I assume it's from surgical clamps etc but ouch. Overall pain was like a 3-4

Time passed by and I was dreading days 4-8.

But every morning when I woke up, before even opening my eyes, I would swallow to test out the pain. To my complete disbelief every morning was virtually painless. And somehow I’ve been sleeping 8-10 hrs each night no problem.

Yesterday (day 7) I would say was peak pain. But I really wasn't in tooo much pain other than a burning for 20 or so minutes after eating. Otherwise I went about my day fine.

I'm on day 8 now. Still looks gross but I feel great! I'm eating normally with some pain, but also haven't taken any pain meds in almost a whole day (yay).

I know I'm not out of the woods yet and I really hope I'm not jinxing myself lol but I am so shocked how easy this has been for me. Like so shocked that I keep laughing to myself. This has been much much easier than most of the tonsillitis infections I had.

I'm really excited to see what my life will be like without daily fevers, strong fatigue, pain and random illnesses. It almost brings a tear to my eye eating food this whole week and not having the immediate consequential fevers and malaise. SO worth it.

I hope this post will be helpful to anyone in the future!

Tips:

Stay as active as you can. Don't push it, you don't want to raise your heart rate too much, but while you heal keep walking if you can tolerate it. I also rested a ton too of course, but moving your body helps healing.

Drink so much water. I'm pushing like 5L or more a day just constantly filling my bottle. Peeing every 20 mins

Chew chew chew and eat as soon as you can tolerate it. I decided that I don't want to let my throat muscles take too much of a break because that can delay healing even more. Super mushy foods and yes it's uncomfortable but I do think this made a huge difference in my recovery time.

What you eat directly affects how you feel daily. What you eat matters so much in normal life and post op life. High protein, high fiber, lots of fruits and veggies to give your body what it needs to heal.

Still sleeping elevated every night, and probably for the next few nights and then I'll go back to normal sleeping.

Humidifier in the room on around the clock.

Ice packs!!!! Huge help with immediate pain relief right after eating last week

Can I eat this?

So I’m on day 10 of recovery. For the past couple of days I’ve been able to eat more and more. Eggs, oatmeal, grits, mashed potatoes, even a little rice, etc. My scabs are coming off nicely and I have very little pain, though I still can’t talk quite yet. Swallowing is mostly uncomfortable. My aunt cooked today and of course I can’t eat most of anything. I didn’t even go to her house because I’m still pretty tired but my mom did and she said that there’s cabbage and mastaccioli there. The cabbage I know I can eat. It’ll be soft enough. The pasta is what I’m worried about. I hear a lot of stories about tomatoes and I’m wondering if I’m at the point where eating them won’t have that big of an impact. So what do you guys think? Should I partake? I’m honestly just so hungry for some real food. Anything besides breakfast and apple sauce.

Does anyone mind giving me their med schedule? I'm still in loads of pain and don't know the correct times i should be taking my meds.

I've been taking paracetamol and ibuprofen and a mouthwash.

I'm on day 3 and in a lot more pain than the previous days.

I aim for 3 meals a day. Still semi soft foods.

Has anyone had altered taste or no taste permanently post tonsillectomy?

So I am getting my tonsillectomy in 19 days due to chronic tonsillitis and multiple abscesses, I’ve been on antibiotics on and off for 4 straight times now. I’ve been looking up potential complications of tonsillectomies and bleeding is a big one but one that’s really scared me is altered taste. I never even knew this was a thing, google says it’s not very common and the permanent is exceptionally rare but does anyone have any personal experience with this?

Post-op pain - opiate free possible?

Hi everyone,

I'm booked in for a tonsilliectomy next year.

I'm currently 18 months free from opiate addiction and I'm really struggling with the idea of taking opiates again post op.

My current thoughts are:

Getting a staged script so I can only pick up one days worth from the chemist at a time

Keeping the meds at my parents house to remove my access to them

Or just toughing it out with paracetamol and NSAIDS.

Would love to hear thoughts from any other recovering addicts in the same situation.

How is life without tonsils if you got them removed as an adult?

I finally have my tonsillectomy scheduled. I am a 30 y/o woman. Ive been wanting them out purely for tonsil stones. Does not having them affect you long term? I hear that its the first line of defense against germs and whatnot. I am looking forward to not dealing with tonsil stones anymore and not havr to worry about how i smell.

“Normal” foods to try

I thought my husband would only want cold things very small pasta, etc. but he cannot sustain on that and on surgery day already had Mac and cheese with shredded chicken. What else were some good go to foods that were hearty enough to sustain you and feel like a meal so I’m not just repeating Mac and cheese or mashed potatoes?

Thank you!

Health changes - One month post surgery

Had Grade 4 tonsils removed due to Sleep apnea ..here are the changes after 4 weeks

- Sleep apnea totally gone
- Better quality sleep . More deep sleep and REM sleep now
- BP reduced from 140/90 to 110/70
- RHR reduced from low 70s to late 50s

Looks like apnea was literally killing me .. should have done surgery earlier itself

I almost died yesterday because of post-tonsillectomy bleeding

I'm 18 years old. Thirteen days ago I underwent a tonsillectomy. My lingual tonsils were reduced, and my palatine tonsils were completely removed. The day after the surgery I experienced severe postoperative bleeding. I nearly choked on the blood and vomited some of it. My mother called emergency services, and I was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. The bleeding eventually stopped without further surgery at that time. I ended up staying in the hospital for six days because of the hemorrhage. After that I was discharged and went home, hoping things would improve.

Then yesterday, on the twelfth day after the original operation, I suddenly started vomiting massive amounts of blood again. It was life-threatening. My mother called emergency services once more. There was so much blood that I nearly died. I was taken to a different hospital, where I continued vomiting huge quantities of blood. The stitches in my throat tore open. I lost consciousness from blood loss. The doctors rushed me into emergency surgery under general anesthesia and used laser cauterization to seal the bleeding wounds. The doctor later told my mother that without the rapid intervention and the second operation, I would have choked to death on my own blood.

A significant amount of blood had also collected in my stomach, so they had to perform a gastroscopy (endoscopy) to suction it out. I'm currently lying in a hospital bed and will have to stay here for several more days. I'm in absolute hell — everything in my throat burns intensely, I have constant shortness of breath and the terrifying sensation that I'm suffocating. I can't taste anything at all, which is driving me insane.

I'm terrified that the combination of the original tonsillectomy, the repeated hemorrhages, and the laser cauterization has permanently damaged my taste nerves, and that I may never be able to taste normally again. I would really like to hear from others who have gone through something similar: how long did it take before you could taste food normally again, breathe without that constant choking feeling, and live without this level of pain?

I'm from Germany and using a translator.
