Am I using Claude the wrong way?

Basically, I don’t want Claude to do the entire project for me. I use Claude through the browser, and when I’m writing a file, I ask it to help me function by function. Sometimes I implement the functions myself and have it review them, and so on. I never just leave it alone to do the entire project.

Now, I’ve realized an issue with this approach.

If it’s something I don’t already know, Claude doesn’t necessarily do deep research. It might just go with the first implementation it comes up with instead of looking into what is currently being used or what the state of the art is.

And because I also don’t know the subject well enough, I don’t catch that until things start failing. But when I do know enough to call it out, I can ask Claude to dig deeper, and then it usually does more thorough research and comes up with a better approach.

I was working on a computer graphics project, and each time I went through this process, it gave me a different implementation. I ended up creating four different repos. And each time it has a different take on something .. so I am confused and I want to know how others use it.

This was with Opus 5.

How do robots sense human-like touch?

I'm interested in learning how robotic hands can sense things like pressure, temperature, roughness/texture, vibration, and skin deformation ... similar to how a human hand feels when touching another person.

I already have experience with coding and have taken an intelligent robotics course, so I'm looking for pointers on going deeper into robotic tactile sensing / electronic skin.

I'd especially appreciate recommendations for research papers, open-source code, simulators, datasets, projects or literally anything to get started.

Seeking advice for hyperpigmentation

Seeking advice for hyperpigmentation on my forehead, around my mouth, and under my eyes

I'm a 24 yr old woman with brown-to-dark skin and grew up in Africa. I used to love sitting in the sun for long periods of time ... sometimes to the point where I would feel nauseous. So I’m wondering if that may be part of why my forehead is noticeably darker than the rest of my face.

I’m looking for advice on what products I should use and how to use them. I don’t really know my skin type, but I’ve never had acne or particularly sensitive skin. I’ve pretty much always used whatever products were available on my face without breaking out.

I also don’t usually have issues with dryness. For example, if I shower and don’t apply moisturizer afterward, my skin still looks and feels fine and doesn’t become ashy.

Overall, I have pretty smooth skin and my main concern is the uneven pigmentation, especially on my forehead and around my mouth/under-eye area.

What products or routine would you recommend for treating this? I’d especially appreciate advice from people with darker skin who have dealt with something similar.

One other thing I’ve noticed is that the skin on my back is about 1–2 shades darker than the skin on the front of my body. I’m not sure if that’s normal either, so I’d appreciate any insight on that as well.

For the products I currently use, I can’t really say much because, like I said, I just use whatever is available like soap, lotion, etc. I’ve used the Dove soap bar (the pink one), La Roche-Posay for both soap and lotion, and a few others that I don’t even remember.

Americans, how do you navigate the fear of shootings and violence day to day?

I moved to the US last August for school, and I’m currently at Brown University. I’m originally from a country where security is pretty tight, and honestly, safety was never something I thought about much in my day-to-day life.

Back home, I used to go out late at night just to enjoy the nightlife, meet strangers, start random conversations, debate with people, etc. I never really thought twice about interacting with someone I didn’t know.

Then the shooting at Brown happened in December. I was there, and it was the first time in my life that I had ever seen or heard a gunshot. Since then, I’ve developed this fear that I can’t seem to shake.

I constantly think about the fact that the person I’m talking to could potentially have a gun. Even when I meet someone new, instead of just being myself and having a normal conversation, part of my brain is thinking, “What if I say something they don’t like and they shoot me?”

I know that probably sounds extreme, but I genuinely never had to think this way before moving here.

Now I barely go out and avoid meeting or becoming friends with people. I grocery shop occasionally, but I basically have a 6 PM curfew for myself and I don't go out at night at all. I feel like I’m missing out on actually living here because I’m constantly thinking about what could happen.

And then I see the news ... shootings, stabbings, random attacks, and it reinforces the fear.

I still want to travel, explore different places, go out at night, meet people, and just live normally without constantly thinking about whether something bad is going to happen.

For Americans, how do you mentally navigate this? Do you just accept that these things can happen and try not to think about them? Do you take certain precautions? How do you balance being aware of your surroundings without living in constant fear?

I’d really like to hear from people who grew up here, especially if you’ve ever had to deal with this kind of fear.

Volumetric path traced skin still looks like silicone/plastic. What am I missing?

Hi everyone,

I'm building a physically-based human skin renderer from scratch in Taichi, and I'm looking for feedback from people with experience in skin rendering.

My current renderer implements:

  • Monte Carlo volumetric path tracing
  • Multiple scattering subsurface scattering (random walk)
  • Two-layer skin model (epidermis + dermis)
  • Melanin and hemoglobin absorption
  • Wavelength-dependent absorption/scattering coefficients (converted to RGB for rendering)
  • Fresnel interface between air and skin

My goal is photorealistic human skin.

I know the model is still missing many surface details such as:

  • pores
  • peach fuzz/facial hair
  • fine wrinkles
  • micro-normal variation
  • oil layer variation
  • color texture variation

I plan to add those later.

Right now I'm trying to get the base skin appearance correct before layering those details on top.

My problem is that the skin still looks like silicone, wax, or plastic rather than living skin.

I'm trying to understand whether the issue is ....

I'd really appreciate feedback from anyone who has worked on skin rendering.

How can I get a firmer upper body without making it look bigger?

I'm a woman who's thinking about starting the gym and stay consistent, but I'm worried about ending up with a physique I won't like.

I've always had a naturally soft body that I like , I don't want to lose that softness or become really lean or muscular especially in my lower body.

What I do want is for my upper body (stomach, arms, and back) to feel a bit firmer. Right now, when I wear fitted tops, everything kind of squishes and creates little bulges, and I hate how it looks plus i am only 53kgs (117lbs). I'm not really trying to lose weight or fat; I just want my upper body to look smoother and more toned while keeping my overall proportions.

My diet is already pretty decent. I don't really eat sugary foods, ultra-processed foods, junk food, fast food, or drink soft drinks. It's not something I force myself to avoid ... i just naturally don't enjoy them.

My biggest concern is that if I start lifting weights, my upper body will end up looking bigger than my lower body. I really like my current proportions and don't want broad shoulders or a noticeably more muscular upper body.

So my question is: Is the look I'm describing actually achievable? Can you build just enough muscle to make your upper body look firmer without making it noticeably larger and not touching my lower body? If so, what kind of workout routine would you recommend?

Thanks
