Thoughts on these X-Rays? Dog with upset stomach
I'll just lead with my actual question - should I be concerned by the xrays of my dogs stomach that he may have eaten something he shouldn't have and I should be doing more to confirm that he is ok?
(hoping I linked those correctly)
Backstory: my dog (8 yo male bloodhound) got into an unfinished bag of tortilla chips on Monday. He didn't eat the bag but I'm not sure if he ate something else. Threw the chips up 2 hours later and continued to vomit several more times on Tuesday. We switched to chicken and rice and he kept Wednesdays breakfast down but not dinner. We made an urgent care appt for Thursday. They did blood tests and xrays. He did not vomit at on Thursday (and so far not today either). This vet office sends off the Xrays and they are sent back within an hour with notes from... I assume another vet or Xray tech? The vet didn't seem to know too much when looking at the xrays herself and just read off the report that was sent back.
The results said "Gastrointestinal: The stomach contains a moderate amount of gas and amorphous soft tissue opaque material. The small intestine contains fluid and gas and remains within normal limits for size. The colon contains feces and gas. The cecum contains gas."
The notes say to time last meal and if its within 8 hours then at minimum there is slow emptying of the stomach. Because the amorphous soft tissue could be food, fluid or foreign material The vet told us, per the xray notes we could fast him 10-12 hours and take new xrays the next day. He was already 11 hours fasted when these were taken. When we told the vet that she just said "oh well, I'm not sure then. But we can take more xrays tomorrow". That's an expensive "lets just do this again" and "we didn't actually figure anything out"
As I said above, my dog has kept his last two meals down and seems to be acting normal today. They prescribed Cerenia to help with the vomiting. I don't know what I am looking at in these xrays and I don't feel super confident my vet did either, but it does look like his stomach is not empty. If all he had eaten was a cup of rice and 2-3 oz of chicken 6:30 am and these were taken at 5:30pm, would these xrays be cause for further tests?
I'm just looking for a little feedback or insight. I don't want to keep taking him to the vet if he just had an upset stomach from eating junk. He hates the vet (he literally just had his yearly checkup last Tuesday and vaccine updates so he is over the poking and proding) and so does my wallet. But I also don't want to assume he's better just because this dang hound never loses his appetite and I just assume he's ok because he's eating and not currently vomiting.
Thank you!
