Ross vs Kovac

Who would you choose?

I would choose Luka. I find his storyline is much more interesting that I want to keep watching to see what happens. I also think he's more likable person.

He along with Abby are the bridge from the OG cast to the Next gen cast. I think with that he sometimes gets overlooked by Mark, Carter, Ross etc.

His introduction is very memorable. Walking into the ER with the young girl in his arms as an oxygen tank rockets through the ER almost hitting him.

I’ve always loved when he first meets Abby. Their formal introduction "Abby Lockhart-Luka Kovac" and then the handshake. Very sweet.

Awkward

This is such an awkward scene between Luka and Sam when he tells her Abby is pregnant.

The timeline maybe is about 6-8 months after Luka and Sam broke up since Abby is about 4 months pregnant.

Not sure why he felt the need to tell her. But as he said, I guess he wanted her to hear it from him first.

Do you think Sam realized that Abby and Luka are soulmates and are meant to be together?

Fun in the Car

Who knew singing Copacabana could be such an aphrodisiac? Then again, it's Luka singing.

I always loved how comfortable Luka is being so silly with Abby. 😍

Most Memorable Scenes

I know with 15 seasons and 331 episodes to choose from this might be like picking a needle out of haystack.

I tried picking scenes that maybe others may have missed and are not as popular. I'm sure I've missed many many others.

  1. Opening scene with Abby and Luka in S7.14. The opening scenes of "A Walk in the Woods" with the four couples is one of the best of the series.
  2. Luka offering Abby to stay at his place after she was beaten up by her neighbor. Despite having broken up months ago, their chemistry is still undeniable. (S8.15)
  3. Mark's last patient in "Orion in the Sky". It's the best of the Mark exit episodes. (S8.18)
  4. Carter trying to save the homeless patient after the pigeons and feathers fly out of his coat. Love the feather landing on his nose. (S7.4)
  5. Morris showing Greg and Ray his four nipples. It's so silly but I always laugh. (S12.12)
  6. Morris discovering Abby is pregnant. Their brother/sister banter is always excellent. (S12.14)
  7. Abby and Frank dancing around the admit desk. A very underrated moment in the series (S15.3)
  8. Abby, Kerry, Sandy and Henry posing for a picture when Henry is released from the NICU. A happy moment in an emotional episode. (S10.12)
  9. Pratt encouraging Neela on her first day in the ER after an elderly patient of hers had died. He shows her the young Mother she helped save. An example of how Pratt is a good teacher/mentor. (S10.1)
  10. Pratt and Mark working together with the patient diagnosed with prostate cancer in Pratt's first episode (S8.18). It shows that despite Pratt's cockiness he's not above accepting criticism that will help make him a better doctor.

Who Would You Choose?

Abby and Luka? or Carol and Doug?

Which couple are your favorite? Why?

Both couples have undeniable chemistry not only between the characters, but also between the actors. When on screen together they shine brightly.

I would choose Abby and Luka. Their love story is so fascinating to watch. Often they can say so much without saying a word which shows how well they can communicate with one another whereas in their other relationships this is a major issue.

These two introverted, troubled souls "who always seem to find each other". There is no doubt the connection they have from the minute they formally introduce themselves in S6 when Abby joins the ER staff to when they drive off into the night on their way to Boston in S15.

Even after their infamous break-up in S8, they become BFFs (FYI: Maura and Goran hated that scene and thought it was totally out of character for both Abby and Luka).

Both come to terms with various individual traumas.

Abby: family history of mental illness, alcoholism, divorce, insecurities about becoming a doctor/parent, bad relationships (Richard, Carter, Jake)

Luka: the profound loss of his wife and children which he deals with on a daily basis, trying to have a family again, bad relationships (Carol, Nicole, his womanizing in S9, Gillian, Sam)

Realizing that the person that would bring them love, happiness, joy and family was always right there beside them--their BFF.

Supporting Cast

I just sent a post recently about my favorite ER characters which only included main cast members.

Many of the supporting cast members have the distinction of being on the show from the onset and until the end of the series which none of the main cast can claim.

Here are my favorite supporting cast:

  1. Haleh - the Mama bear of the ER
  2. Chuny - a sweet supportive Nurse to everyone
  3. Malik - another sweet supportive Nurse to everyone and also gets in a few zingers now and then
  4. Frank - Beneath the bigoted exterior beats the heart of softie. I love his relationship with Pratt and one of my favorite scenes of the series is when he dances around the admit desk with Abby
  5. Jerry - Such a loveable, funny staffer, a maybe a bit of a Mama's boy (wish we had more scenes with his Mother played by the late great Estelle Harris)

Honorable Mention: Dubenko, all the EMTs (Zadro, Pickman, Bardelli, Pam), Yosh ("say hi to Yosh!")

EDIT: Forgot to include Coburn in my HM.

Who’s Your Favorite?

Here's my top 5 list. Who would be on your list?

  1. Abby - Best of the next Gen characters, beautifully complex, fascinating, funny
  2. Luka - An underrated leader of the ER staff, loved watching his journey coming to terms with his PTSD and finally finding love and a family again with Abby
  3. Mark - Best of the OG characters, heart of the ER
  4. Pratt - Has one of the best character growths during his long tenure on the show, also one of the saddest death scenes along with Mark and Lucy's
  5. Kerry - Hard ass at times, but well respected and revered doctor/administrator, her struggle with her sexuality adds to her intriguing character

Honorable mentions: Susan, Benton, Neela

Banned from the Baby Store?

Do you think that Abby and Luka stopped themselves from going much further than making out in the dressing room especially with just a curtain for privacy?

They are giddy with happiness in this episode S12.12). Plus I like that all of their scenes take place outside the hospital.

Reese Benton & Joe Kovac

Thought I'd give a shoutout to these two young actors who played Reese Benton and Joe Kovac. They were both terrific.

I love the fact that the same actor plays Reese throughout his time on the show. He even returns in S15 for the series finale.

It's a shame we didn't get to see Joe as he gets older. I wonder if he's as tall as his father or has his mother's wicked sense of humor?

The Kiss

This might one of the most iconic kisses in the show's history.

What's so wonderful about this scene is that for the entire episode there is no hint that this might happen. Abby and Luka's scenes throughout the episode are only focused on their young patient Sydney Carlyle.

Abby's emotional response with her voice cracking as she tells Luka that she can't stop thinking about what happened to this 10 year old girl and why they couldn't save her. Maura and Goran's performances are so wonderful.

Also Laura Innes aka Kerry Weaver directed this episode S12.7 and it was written by R. Scott Gemmill now of "The Pitt" fame.

Abby and Luka FINALLY reunited!😍

Favorite Guest Star?

In ER's 15 season run, I am always amazed at the fantastic guest stars the show had over its long run. Many only appeared in one episode but made a lasting impression (i.e. Ray Liotta).

Sally Field is the best of them all. She was perfectly casted as Abby's Mom. Her scenes with Maura Tierney were always amazing.

James Cromwell is my other favorite. Luka's story arc with Bishop Stewart was such an integral part to his character. Probably a coincidence, but it's always interesting to note that he's taller than Goran.

Honorable mention: Alan Alda, Don Cheadle

Pain and Suffering

Name me another character who has had more pain and suffering thrown at them than Abby? Luka might be a close second.

Through all of this she is able to become an even stronger person, more compassionate doctor, find her soulmate and have a family with Luka which is something she thought she would never have.

  1. Alcoholic
  2. Divorced
  3. Had to drop out of med school when her shitty ex-husband didn't pay her tuition
  4. Lifelong trauma with a mentally ill Mother and Brother also an absentee Father
  5. It takes a VERY long time until she and Luka to realize they are soulmates in addition to being BFFs
  6. Gets beat-up by her abusive neighbor
  7. Quarantined with Carter after small pox outbreak then dates him (doomed from the start)
  8. Needs to wait to pass her medical board test to officially become a doctor
  9. Gets kidnapped
  10. Collapses after being shot at by Sam's ex and goes into premature labor
  11. Has an emergency cesarean section
  12. Almost dies during childbirth
  13. Joe Kovac is born prematurely and spends weeks in the NICU
  14. Has a hysterectomy
  15. Curtis Ames stalks and tortures her family
  16. Luka's sudden absence while tending to his sick father....WTF! WTF! WTF!
  17. Relapses
  18. Is raped by Moretti
  19. Goes to rehab
  20. Is VERY BRIEFLY separated from Luka

She MOST DEFINITELY deserved the happy ending she received as she, Luka and Joe drive off to a new start in Boston.

Walk in Woods-S7.14

This episode might have the best opening scene of the series.

The four vignettes with Benton and Cleo, Mark and Elizabeth, Kerry and Kim and my favorite Abby and Luka.

Filmed almost in black and white while snowing outside adds to atmosphere each of the scenes.

The episode also features the wonderful Bishop Stewart story arc.

Chef’s kiss!

Secrets and Lies S8.16

One of the reasons I like this episode so much (despite the horrible revelation about Carter's virginity) is that we find out interesting tidbits about the each of the Breakfast Club members backstory.

Abby - Went to Penn State and was an English major, was second in her class of her 3rd year of med school before dropping out

Luka - Did theater in college, his recitation of "To Be or Not to Be" (chef's kiss!) from Hamlet is a homage to the fact that Goran performed in Hamlet prior to ER.

Gallant - Has a twin sister and comes from a large military family

Susan - During her southwest venture she was almost engaged to a cowboy named Dix

Carter - Fenced in college and knows how to pick a lock with his credit card

Edit: Cue Simple Minds “Don’t you forget about me!" LOL!!!😂 😂

Geeking Out

“Mars Attack” (S7.3) is a contender for one of the more fun episodes to watch. The trauma cases are relatively benign compared to the usual weekly cases that are featured.

Abby experiencing her first day working in the ER after being transferred from OB by Kerry. Abby is immediately the go-to Nurse by the doctors.

The episode also features Eric Stonestreet of "Modern Family" fame as an ultra Star Trek fan who tries making his ears look like a Vulcan's/Spock's.

Of course, the scene with Abby and Luka outside on the bench where she “geeks out” and spontaneously kisses Luka after he encourages her that "she's good nurse, but could be a great doctor" is part of the Abby and Luka’s love story.

What other episodes are fun to watch? I would add “Secrets and Lies” S8.16

Girl Meets Boy

Abby Lockhart......Luka Kovac

I always thought it was a nice touch that Abby and Luka have a formal introduction. Gets lost a bit in their love story lore. Not sure if any other ER couple have that as part of their love story.

Abby: "We never had doctors like that up in OB."

Haleh: "Easy on the eyes."

Abby: "I'll say. Is he single?"

Carol: "Doesn't talk much about his personal life."

Abby: "Tall, dark, handsome and mysterious." 😍😍

So begins my favorite ER couple's love story in all its beautiful, complex, fascinating twists and turns.

Abby Kovac??

Did Abby change her name to Abby Kovac?

She kept her ex-husband's last name when she got divorced since it is easier to spell and pronounce than her maiden name Wyczenski.

I'd like to think that she did change her name to Abby Kovac since having her ex-husband's last name while being remarried would be a bit strange.

Plus having to explain to Joe why her last name was "Lockhart" instead of Kovac might be very awkward to explain since it’s not her maiden name.

Happiest Farewell

I had a recent posting about the Saddest Farewell https://www.reddit.com/r/ershow/comments/1tw9ehb/saddest_farewell/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

So I thought what are the happiest farewells on ER.

Carol - My only compliant about her last episode (S6.21) is that she didn't have a longer goodbye with Mark who was one of her best friends. Loved what she told Luka!

Benton - Glad he and Cleo stayed together. Although Benton had better chemistry with Elizabeth as evident in the series finale.

Carter - Wasn't sure if I should include him since he returns in S15, but at first at it seemed like he found his place in the world in Africa and love with Kem.

Kerry - Her goodbyes with Abby and Luka were lovely and showed how their friendships had developed over the seasons.

Abby - I liked in her final episode she had several goodbye moments with Neela, Dubenko, her dance with Frank and more importantly the locker name plate scene with Haleh. That was priceless.

Luka - His departure is course alongside Abby's. It would've been nice if he had some more screentime with the rest of the staff. He really only had a brief conversation with Pratt (S14.19).

Neela - off to NOLA to be with Ray which many in the fan base like. I think her character got shortchanged with her relationships. Gallant was probably the best of the bunch, but unfortunately they didn't give it enough substance.
