In later seasons, the series establishes a pretty clear split between the "old gang" and the new characters. This becomes especially evident in the last few episodes of the series when the "old" characters are called back for a final "throwback" get together. Carter, Benton, Lewis, Weaver, and Corday hang out together at the bar and later the hospital. Ross and Hathaway were featured in an earlier episode. Greene and Romano were brought back in flashbacks. Jeanie Boulet also came back in season 14.

I still feel that Abby and Luka could have been part of that "gang". Sure they were only introduced in season 6, and they basically stayed until the end so maybe a final comeback wasn't needed, but they were still central characters in the show when it still was the "old" show, and they had key interactions with nearly all the "old" characters. Kovac had a romantic relationship with Hathaway. Abby obviously had her time with Carter but she was also friends with Lewis and Weaver, and pretty close to Greene whom she saw as a mentor. They weren't part of the show when it became a sensation, but they still were part of its history.

And what about Chen? She was never THE star in the show, she was always kind of in the background but she was also technically one of the oldest characters in the show. She met all the old characters AND the new ones. She was possibly the closest non-romantic relationship Carter ever has in the show (maybe after Benton). She was there when he was a young inexperienced med student, she was there when he was a resident and got stabbed, she was there when he became a confident attending after Mark died. I feel she could have been included.

I’m on season 9 now and Luka is like a whole different man than he was with Carol.

I remember being 9 years old and watching my sister cry her eyes out over Derek Sheppards death. I could not for the life of me at that time understand why she was crying so much. I watch a lot of Tv a lot of dramas, comedy, action, I’ll watch it all. I’ve teared up, dropped a few tears and sat there and cried for a couple min on 1 occasion. Never in my life have I spent and hour tearing up every 10 minutes over 1 episode, just to spend the next hour crying because of yet another episode. Just when I was recovering post funeral scene they hit me with the ballons and im in tears again. I had to take a moment to a) sob for a few minutes b) write this while frankly surfing from a crying induced headache. A characters death has never hit me this hard in my entire life. I also knew from literally episode 1 that he was going to at some point die and yet I was so under prepared. If I had gone into this not knowing he would die I think I might genuinely be depressed rn. I didn’t realize until the letter how ingrained he really was, even though when he wasn’t in the previous 2 episodes I kept thinking where’s mark and then remembering he left. Knowing they planned this for 2 years i have to give them props bc I don’t think it could’ve hurt any more than it did. Mark Greene might be one of the most well written characters of a drama I’ve ever seen, he definitely wins best death, All I want now is for them to give us updates on Rachel until Cordae leaves that’s all I beg for.

Currently at the beginning of season 15. Her story has been drawn out and contorted and gone on far too long.

I assume they felt like they had to have a “main character” but holy shit I’m so tired of Abby.
