Legality of Boro's actions

Most of the focus on spygate has been around the EFL's rules and potential sanctions - for obvious reasons, ie we care about the football implications.

But one thing just occurred to me. Boro officials "forced" the supposed spy to delete the footage from his phone. How exactly can you force someone to do something like that other than threatening them, through actual or implicit threats of violence? Assuming that's what happened, isn't it Boro officials who actually committed a criminal offense? Which would be a police matter of course
