Swedish public radio just reported that investigators may have found an object buried beneath the sediment at the bottom of Lake Nammajaure in northern Sweden. The case dates back to 1980, when two hikers watched a cigar-shaped object fly silently over them before descending into the lake.
What's interesting is that this isn't a brand-new investigation.
The case has a surprisingly deep history:
Shortly after the sighting, Sweden's FOA (the predecessor to FOI, Sweden's Defence Research Agency) investigated it.
Investigators checked with Esrange, the Swedish Air Force (F21), RFN Vidsel missile test range, civilian aviation, and military radar records. Nothing matched the observation.
In 2012, UFO-Sweden organized a major expedition using sonar, divers, and metal detectors, but couldn't identify the object.
Now, after another expedition, sonar has reportedly detected something buried in the mud, and the team plans to investigate it using 3D imaging before attempting recovery.
Whether it turns out to be an ordinary object or something more unusual, I think this is exactly how these cases should be handled: revisit credible historical reports using modern technology instead of speculation alone.
One detail I find fascinating is that the witnesses originally feared it could have been some kind of Soviet cruise missile or military hardware, given the Cold War context. Yet decades of checks apparently failed to identify any known activity in the area.
Hopefully we'll soon learn what has been sitting beneath that lake for nearly half a century. Even if it's not NHI, solving a long-standing mystery like this would be a win for everyone interested in UAP history.
Glad sommar!
