Our woodland garden is still pretty new. This is actually on our septic drain field and this was all alder trees at one point that had to be cut down for the drainfield. Its was a very small portion of our woods though just a bunch of 5 year old alder trees. We made sure that none of the older growth was touched and will be preserving the rest of our woods for the rest of our lives. Once the trees were cut, the space had sunken garden potential, so I ran with that. most of the growth was already here, but there were a bunch of fallen trees and it looked messy. So I've been working on cleaning it up I've been adding plants for the last 2 years and just finished planting the last addition. This area was a bit of a dead zone when we first moved here, so I picked things that will mesh well with the woodland plants that are already here. I also added pollinator plants, and things that deer, squirrels and birds like to eat and it has been teeming with life this spring. Now I just have to wait for my new plants to get established and in a few years I hope the climbing roses cover that arbor and the rhododendrons and lilacs are intertwined in the trees. But for now I think it is pretty perfect and I'm beyond lucky to have it.
