My Medical Abortion Experience
I thought I’d post this in hopes in may help someone down the road…
I’ve had 2 medical abortions. The first 4 years ago, and the 2nd yesterday.
My first time, after all the scans and blood work to rule out an ectopic pregnancy, I was 9 weeks along.
My prescription was $15 (mifepristone, misoprostol, ibuprofen, tramadol & anti nausea medication). $90 for the ultrasounds.
I took the mifepristone, no symptoms or anything after taking that. Then 24 hours later I put 4 misoprostol tablets between my gum & cheek (2 each side).
This isn’t my clinics fault, but when I asked about pain during the abortion she said everyone’s different but how she described it, it was more of an intense period. So I didn’t think it was going to be very bad…it was. So I stupidly didn’t take any of the pain meds.
Within 45 minutes I began cramping & bleeding, the pain was very intense. I was also nauseous and began having the worst diarrhoea I’ve ever experienced. For the next 7 hours I was going between pacing my room, wailing in pain, back to the toilet, laying in the fetal position, repeat. I remember passing the pregnancy tissue (it looked like a grey blob) and then my symptoms started to fade. I was supposed to take 2 more misoprostol pills 4 hours after the last 4 pills. But I was so busy being sick and in incredible pain I couldn’t do it. I finally fell asleep around 2am and the next day felt fine. Just a few mild cramps.
My clinic called me the next business day and I explained the above about the missed pills. They monitored me but after a few days they were confident that I passed all the pregnancy tissue, and everything was fine afterwards.
Yesterday I had my second medical abortion
I had some tests done and after multiple blood tests my hcg levels weren’t rising normally, and after an ultrasound and another blood test it was deemed non viable at 6 weeks and I decided to terminate.
It was the same as last time. I took the mifepristone, then 24 hours later I took the 4 misoprostol pills between my cheeks & gums.
Because of my first experience I was very scared and anxious about the pain. So this time before the misoprostol pills I took one of my anti nausea meds & 2x 200mg ibuprofen & 1 tramadol (and took and other 2 ibuprofen 4 hours later).
The misoprostol pill effects kicked in after about 45 minutes. I began to mildy cramp about an hour later. The gradually began to feel a bit more intense but nothing worse than my period. The wave of cramping would last about 20 minutes then would slow down to almost nothing & then slowly ramp up again. I had very mild nausea. I kept a hot water bottle against my stomach constantly for the next 7 hours. I was able to walk around, and do small things around the house. It literally felt like an intense period. I took the next 2 misoprostol pills at 7pm, the cramps got a little more intense. But was able to go to bed around 10pm (I started the process at 3pm). During, I had small clots but nothing like the first time.
I woke up around 2am with cramping but nothing too intense. Then slept till 7am. Still some very mild cramping but felt fine.
I had heard that everyone experiences them differently or depending on how far along the pregnancy is it can be more painful/intense. So for most of the evening I was just waiting for it to turn horrible and be in pain but it was pretty smooth sailing. I took the pain & nausea meds this time so I’m assuming that made quite the difference. But if anyone has questions please feel free to comment or DM me.
