I want to do a vacation w/ wife that would hit those three destinations -- San Francisco, Big Sur (bascially Hwy 1 thing) and some kind of Redwoods destination. Maybe 6-7 days. We'd be flying in, so no car unless we rent one.

What would be your recommendations on attacking this?

Is it a good idea to attempt all three, or better to focus on one or two?

Rent a car for whole thing, or just for the road trips? Do a tour for the road trips? Stick to SF and forget the rest? Forget SF and make it a Pacific Coast Hwy thing?

What would you do?

I've found an ancestor who served a 1-year term from around August 1961 to August 1962. Started at age 17. Says he was mustered out in 1962 (after the Seven Days Battles and before Second Bull Run, fwiw). Pretty sure a healthy 18-year-old Confederate isn't allowed to go home and stay. What are the possibilities here?
