Opinion - the problem isn't 3D, it's lighting
I've had a go at what I think SH4 should look and feel like.
From what I've seen so far, SH4 looks very bright and happy. What's great about the visual style of SH1 isn't just the fact that it's 2D - the visual atmosphere reflects the setting of the British Isles. It's dark, a bit glum, and muddy. Now I know there's weather as well, but it's more the fact that the sunlight almost makes walls and buildings glow.
The other element of the visual style is it's cleanliness. The old 2D style added a certain roughness that the 3D style struggles to reproduce. Sure the rocks and fixed terrain have it, but when you look at the keep or walls they look quite smooth, a bit cartoonish. I'd love it if they could add a bit more "grain" to these elements.
