I recently bought a 2015 Jetta SE 1.8T from Car Max at the beginning of the month. Since I don’t know much about cars I brought it to a German car specialist to do a post purchase inspection. The specialist said that the timing chain is at 4.5 degrees and I should replace it and wanted to charge $3500.
Since I bought the car at Car Max I have the 90 day warranty and brought it in today to have them look at it and hopefully replace it under the warranty.
I brought the invoice from the specialist with me to Car Max that said “timing chain was measured at 4.5 degrees. Recommended to costumer to change asap”. The Car Max tech came out and showed me when they did the same reading it was only 1.5 degrees (practically brand new) and would not replace it or budge on their reading. Car Max said that they always do that for Audi and Volkswagen at the specialist to upcharge.
Now I’m stuck and don’t know who to believe. If anyone has gone through something similar, please let me know what you did and what I should do for next steps.
Edit: the car has 70k miles on it.
