Interview

Hi,I have an upcoming interview with CarMax for an analyst role - the next round is three one-hour interviews. Has anyone gone through this process before? What was it like? They don't share much information beforehand, and I'd like to know what to expect, especially for the case study portion.

Do the cars come with what CM gets?

We will be buying a low mileage Mercedes S series, late model for a great price from CarMax this week. I know the one I want, and I have to stay home because of a severe back issue that really doesn't allow me to sit around for 3 hours while someone helps my husband do the test drive, the general " oh wow" factor he does ( aerospace engineers love ALL things that zoom) and then get the car paid for, likely one handed one key fob and sent on his way or not..

We had a bad experience with a 2000 MB SLC convertible 2 years ago in that the car was very low mileage and still has 0 flaws that we are aware of, but it was stripped of: $140 owner's manual, the 2 floor mats ( they did put AMG ones in after he was walking away because I truly CARE about a luxury car looking luxurious from any dealer's showroom, and the wheel covers ( not hubcaps but wheel covers, and I hope I am using the right term.) They were going to sell him the car without necessary and photographed parts. Again, they put AMG wheels on the car and it's OK but it's NOT OEM.

The outlay of cash purchase to CM for the S series car should matter to them. Will they help him get the car in the condition it was manufactured ( there are no known or shown imperfections but I only see one key fob and no headrest pillows in the photos and again the center console looks covered or dirty to me.
I refuse to go and get upset at the people who are choosing to make their sales people sell incomplete used vehicles as " loaded and like new with extremely low mileage", so staying out of it at home. I'm losing sleep wondering if we should finally buy slightly used ( depreciated) Mercedes elsewhere but he seems to think CM is fair and has an almost unlimited supply in our major city. Thanks to anyone with help. I guess the other part of my birthday gift has to be the missing OEM, the fix of a bad looking tiny paint touch up drop on the hood and for me to simply be grateful to have someone who loves me enough to buy cars which should be great for a long time. :) Best to all, thanks!!

Unsure about the best course of action

One week ago, husband and I purchased a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport from CarMax. It's been working like a dream, but after coming home from a 4th of July party the engine basically went capoot very suddenly and very abruptly, and we immediately went to CarMax to get it serviced.

Since the service department is closed, we can't get it looked at till Monday at the earliest. Husband and I were given a loaner vehicle in the mean time, but we're at a loss because we don't know what to do.

We both like the car and we do want to keep it. Prior to the incident today it worked perfectly, but we don't want to have a car that is constantly in need of repairs and a part of us wonders if it's best to just get a different car while our 10 Day Return Policy is still active or if we should just wait it out.

Should I sell in person?

Trying to sell my car and I accepted the offer online. I submitted the required documents and information online but the document review is taking a while. I still owe money on the car but the offer than carmax offered is much higher than the amount owed.

I know they have to contact my bank but it doesn't take that long to verify the payoff amount right? Would going in person speed up the selling process? Thanks

Would you buy this Nissan rogue 2022 sport so model from CarMax?

Next week I will be buying a car from CarMax and I keep eyeing this 2022 Nissan rogue sport so model. I’m concerned with just how much they improved these cvt transmissions and would really like some advice as to if I should buy it. It’s in my price range and meets my monthly payment budget and has all the neat features you want in a car and it only has 39k miles on it

Terrible experience

Long story short sales associate was a new guy and somehow backed the car I was purchasing into something while I was signing paperwork. They sent me home with a loaner until the bumper can be replaced. This car I’ve been waiting for a long time to get the exact trim and mileage so I really don’t want to walk away from it (I also had it shipped from a state over and it took them two weeks to process, I should’ve just drove and got it) but I’m super frustrated with the customer service experience.

Within the hour I left the lot with the loaner they called and said I needed to sign more docs on the new car. The next day I got an email saying the business office associate didn’t do my loaner paperwork correctly.

At this point I’m holding off going back there until my car is ready and not signing anything until I get eyes on it.

They offered to buy us dinner the night of the incident and pay my first months payment for all of these issues. Should I be asking for anything else? I feel like in the grand scheme another dealer would be doing more.

Customer attempting fraud at CarVibe Houston dealership and I can't decide if its real or a skit

Apparently somebody came in trying to buy a car with fake docs / identity issues, the deal started throwing fraud alerts, and then this dude comes flying around the corner in a yellow vest blowing a whistle like the dealership ordered a federal task force off Temu.

People in the comments are calling him Officer Doofy and, unfortunately, that is pretty accurate.

I know this sub usually hates dealerships, and fair enough, but I looked them up after seeing the video and they don’t seem like one of those random sketchy lots. Reviews look pretty solid, inventory/pricing actually looks decent, and they seem to do inspections / short warranty coverage on a lot of their cars.

Still an absolutely unhinged way to handle fraud though. 😂

Life after being an XM?

I'm currently an XM at a busy store. I've learned a ton so far, but I think it's time to move on. I see the XF career path is very rigid at this company, and I don't feel like it is for me. Another way to rephrase that is, I don't want to become an LGM at some faraway grand opening before moving onto more regional and less customer facing roles.

Bottom line is I feel like the more I stay at this role, the more I will be pigeonholing myself into a retail job. It took me some time to realize that working for carmax, simply put, is working in retail. The customers are taxing and makes the job feel like working at some automotive equivalent of walmart. The XM role is arguably responsible for too much, and the pay is closer to being unfair than it is fair for the 50+ hours per week, saturday shifts, and all-times-of-the-day schedule.

I'm great with cars and want to move onto a new role within the automotive space that isn't so focused on retail. I want my saturdays and holidays back so I can spend time with my family and actually give it a shot at growing. The way I see it is Carmax just isn't sustainable for the normal, M-F lifestyle I want to live. Tack on how I feel like this job is making me waste my undergrad degree, and the perfect storm of "I don't like this" starts brewing every time I'm locking up the building at 10pm one night, or opening it up at 7am the next morning.

Question for you folks, what did you life look like after Carmax? Did you stay in a sales-forward role at another dealership, or pivot to something else in the automotive industry? Or did you end up sliding into another retail-based job?

Help me see the way out, please and thank you!

Carmax Finance-Extension on payment?

Has anyone in CA used an extension on their carmax loan before? Yes, we are directly financed with Carmax Auto Finance. We are about 8 months from payoff and had a big financial emergency come up this month and want to extend the payment to the end of the loan to give some breathing room. We have never asked for one before. What does the process look like for someone who lives in CA (i know certain states have certain laws) Do they require a signed extension agreement? If so, do both parties have to sign? Can it be digital? Or is it just a verbal extension?

Thanks for the help!

Experienced buying 2022 to 2024 A3 or A4 or A5 on Carmax or Carvana or similar.

It’s proving very difficult to find a desirable used 2022 to 2024 A3 or A4 or A5 in my area (Boston).
I see lots of them online available for delivery to me. Buying a car sight unseen is challenging.
Can you share your experience or suggestions?

Pre-Approval Baiting???

Hey All...

Finally going with CarMax for my next car.
Have read mostly great things.

My pre-approval rate was at 4.94% with a $5500 down payment over 60 months.
I thought, great!

Pay for the shipping of the car, start the paperwork, get to the finance options. 6.94% for the same rate and down payment.

My credit score is 820.

What is with this? I feel cheated.

Uniforms

I heard people sell their uniforms online sometimes when they separate with CarMax. I dunno if anyone is interested but I have a variety of uniforms if anyone is interested or has recommendations where to look.

Got a hoodie, one of the blue wind breakers, normal blue polo, long sleeve, CarMax cares, that new button down gray and some more. Imma just sell them at a way more reasonable number than the store if anyone has recommendations

MaxCare Question

I’m planning to purchase a 23 Mazda SUv (60k miles) from CarMax. We don’t have a RepairPal certified shop within 175-200 miles(as per RepairPal website). Will MaxCare covers repairs at other shops? Should I still get it?

I’m begging yall, PLEASE get MaxCare

Look I understand, not everybody has it in their budget for extended service plans or this and that.. I know some see it as an upsell, But you are buying a USED car, there is nothing anybody can do after you’ve had the car after 30 days. Let alone 2 months to a year... it’s the name of the game most of the time these symptoms are not visible during inspection and haven’t kicked any red flags for anybody during any stage of the process. But after wear and tear and so many miles, maintenance/repairs happen. Please get maxcare and save yourselves some money if (god forbid) your car decides to take a crap on you.

CarMax sold my reserved Tesla after I had already completed the test drive and scheduled pickup. Is this normal?

I’m trying to understand whether this is normal for CarMax or if anyone has experienced something similar.

I found a 2024 Tesla Model 3 at CarMax Fremont and went through almost the entire purchase process:

  • Reserved the vehicle
  • Paid the transfer fee
  • Completed the test drive
  • Authorized the inspection
  • CarMax found a few issues and kept the car to complete the repairs
  • We scheduled my appointment to return and complete the purchase

A few hours later, I received a notification that the car had been reassigned to anothers branch customer.

I immediately contacted the store and was told that the situation might still be resolved once the vehicle reached its destination. I waited for updates over the next several days, believing they were trying to recover the vehicle.

Instead, the car was sold to another customer.

Customer Relations later offered only a refund of my transfer fee and up to $500 toward another transfer. The problem is that comparable 2024 Model 3s in CarMax inventory are now several thousand dollars more expensive, so that offer doesn’t actually put me back where I was before this happened.

I wasn’t asking for a discount—I simply asked CarMax to provide a reasonably comparable replacement vehicle, since I had already completed nearly every step of the purchase process. That request has been denied.

Has anyone experienced something similar with CarMax?

If you work for CarMax, I’d also be interested to know whether this is expected policy or whether something clearly went wrong in my case.

I’m currently pursuing the matter through Customer Relations and other consumer channels, but I’d genuinely like to know if this has happened to anyone else.

Racism and Sexism against White Men at CarMax Corporate

I’m not sure if it’s this way at the stores, but at corporate being “anti-white man” is openly talked about and accepted by the Managers/Executives and HR. There have been multiple white women who have said things like “there are too many white men, we need more diversity” and the managers and VPs always sweep it under the rug. 2 of these white women just got promoted to senior manager and are very open about wanting to hire mostly women and they are applauded for it. They want to hire non-white people too, but only for lower positions.

Nope

No one should be buying a car from this place! My family purchased a car three years ago or four years ago from this place. They told us that the car was in tiptop shape, there was nothing to worry about. They did a full inspection and everything checked out. I would say eight months after getting the car, we experienced so much stuff! A family member had to take out a loan to get the car repaired and to get a brand new transmission that a dealership did not do properly! About a year ago we had to sell our car to a junkyard, because it was a lemon car! And my family has been trying to go after Carmax ever since! They’re not true or honest about everything that they do to inspect the car

How often does Carmax adjust the listing price of a car on their lot?

I test drove a toyota at carmax, was a serious buyer. I was going to the bank later that week to transfer the amount into my account. 23k listing. A few days later I refreshed the ad to make sure it was still listed (it was a crazy work week for me). It shot up to 27k listing, so they added 4 grand onto it without any notice.

That kinda rubbed me the wrong way because it was already priced aggressively but I had accepted mentally the first price. Anyways, that was a month ago and it's still on the lot. Do they ever reduce the cost "with the market" or whatever?

I ask this since I already know that they are a no haggle, no negotiations company.

Looking at a 2016-2018 Wrangler as my first real car, realistic or bad idea for around $15k?

Hi! I’m looking into getting a Jeep Wrangler and wanted honest opinions from people who actually own one.

This would technically be my second car, but really my first car. I currently have a 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL that was a hand-me-down, but it’s starting to have issues, so I’m looking for something else.

My budget is around $15k, but I could possibly stretch a little, but no more than $19k out the door. I don’t know a lot about cars yet, but I’ve been doing my research, and based on my budget, it seems like 2016 to 2018 Wranglers are the ones that fit best.

I’ve always loved the look of Jeep Wranglers. They remind me of a G-Wagon, which is my dream car. I’ve never actually driven in a Wrangler before, so I’m trying to be realistic before getting too attached.

I’ve heard they can be loud, rough, and not the smoothest daily drivers, but I honestly don’t think I’d mind that. I’ve also heard mixed opinions, some people love them and some people say not to buy one, so I wanted to ask actual Jeep owners.

I’m not super picky about color or interior. Leather would be nice, but fabric seats are fine too. I do like the look of the Sahara trim because it feels a little less sporty and more polished, but I know those can be more expensive. I want a hard top, and I’m open to either a 2-door or 4-door.

For my budget, is a Wrangler realistic? Are there certain years, trims, mileage ranges, or red flags I should look for or avoid? Any advice would be appreciated!

Question about loaners

I was talking to someone the other day about how loaners from dealerships work. I have a Ford I bought at a Ford dealership and took it in for service. They gave me a loaner. I had to show them my license, insurance, they gave me a brand new Bronco to drive and told me don't go over 1,900 miles on the odometer. I got close so they swapped it for a brand new F-150 XLT.

About 15 years ago, I bought an Accord from Carmax. I had a couple of issues with it shortly after buying it. I'm pretty certain the loaner they gave me was some random car off the lot and they didn't check my insurance or anything. Does that seem normal or am I remembering it incorrectly?
