This was a short story I read in public school. It takes place in a dystopian future where in order to have a baby you have to have a "baby card" (like a food ration card). These cards are limited and hard to come by.
A couple takes care of their old aunt and they assume that the old aunt is going to give them her baby card when she dies. When the aunt dies, she wills the baby card to somebody else, and the couple is distraught. The wife makes the husband his favourite meal, and poisons it. Before he does, he writes a letter to his unborn child encouraging the child to love his mother.
If you could help me find this story, I'd be incredibly appreciative.
Thanks!
