A quick note to draw your attention to the new blog post I wrote, and to invite everyone to come and put your name on the leader-board!
You may have noticed the new banner at the top of the sub and found yourself wondering about its provenance. Well, it’s a snippet from Peter MacCarthy’s original 1960 manuscript for Androcles, which was provided to the Museum of Rural English Life (MERL) by Kingsley Reed, and put on display there in the Sound-writing exhibition in 1972.

I am one of the mods of r/shavian, a community dedicated to the Shavian alphabet, an alternative alphabet for the English language.
Our problem: reddit’s automatic AI based translation butchers Shavian. Its hit or miss, but sometimes it does worse than a poor job of it, producing complete English sentences that have absolutely nothing to do with what the author actually wrote. Complete non-sequitur, real “my hovercraft is full of eels” territory.
This worse-than-bad “translation” is actively undermining our community’s mission of helping new users on their journey of learning the alphabet.
My question: is there a way for us to disable the automatic translation? Or otherwise for Reddit devs to actively disable translation attempts for rare scripts?
A bunch of you had been asking for me to add other keyboard layouts to Shaw-Type, and I’d found myself wanting to play around with different keyboard layouts too, so I have made it possible to edit your own custom keyboard layouts with custom ligatures! You can import and export them, so if you develop one you’re particularly pleased of, you can share it with the rest of the community here too.
To give you some inspiration as a starting point, here’s Marty’s Shaw Fish layout in the Discord Server. It should also be possible to do things like u/Dechifro’s digraph as an entry method.
I had a lot of fun building the editor, and even more fun playing around with the resulting layouts. Please let me know how you get on!
Oh, and the leaderboard is still most definitely a thing that needs you to put your name on it.

A new quick little blog post in Shavian. Will upload a Latin reverse transliteration shortly.
Shaw-type just got a lot more fun! It now has a global leader-board, so you can submit your scores and compete with all the other Shavians out there (all ten of us.)
There is also a brand new game mode, "Common Words", which, as the name suggests, allows you to practice typing the 500 most common words in the English language. (There's also a new Common Words practice mode for those who are too shy to compete...)

This has been a challenging one, but the results hopefully speak for themselves! Following the example of the Shavian edition of Androcles and the Lion, I’ve built a parallel ebook reader in Shave, that matches the two scripts in parallel, line for line. I hope this proves to be a very useful way for new Shavians to master reading the script!
The existing shavian-only mode is still there, and it still supports tapping on words to show the Latin script equivalent.
By popular demand, I’ve also added support for uploading already transliterated epubs to the tool. Sort of fun this: it runs the reverse transliterator over these books, but still allows you to read and download them in Shavian. (Even in the new side-by-side mode.) The reverse transliteration run means that the tool will do its best to serve you the right roman spelling of words you are not sure about.
As a reminder, Shave has an extensive library of public domain books - if you sign in, you can help edit them, and even share your own.
Please give it a spin, and let me know what you think! I‘m still polishing off some rough edges, but it should be usable already. Please do let me know if you run into problems.
(Dang it I should have called it Shave 2.0.)
Been wondering where to find anything good to read in Shavian? Or have you been trying to figure out how to convert ebooks yourself but not getting satisfactory results? Maybe you have been considering putting your hand to transliterating a public domain masterpiece into Shavian for the greater good, but finding the task of doing an entire book yourself too daunting?
If you fall into any of those categories, you are in luck. I have been putting far more time than I should have, to take [https://shave.joro.io/books\](Shave Books) to the next level. Please stop by and give it a spin. I’m sure you will find the new ebook reader as enjoyable as I have (it even has latin tooltips!)
To get all the goodies, like access to the - currently around - 20 shared books in the platform’s library, you will want to create an account. Some of you will find that a hassle, but this was necessary to avoid abuse, spam, DOS, and all that fun stuff.
Please give it a spin and let me know how you get on!
Hey all!
I'd been tinkering away on extending the shaw-spell dictionary and just went and forgot to release it. Version 1.3 is out now! The web-uI is much more functional now: it has the latest Readlex update, plus some supplements of my own. It also recognises alternative spellings of words, and will offer you suggestions if you look for an incorrectly spelt word.
The macOS dictionaries have the same updated lexicon, and a vastly improved spell-checker: far fewer false positives, not flagging as many (valid) alternative spellings as wrong. You can download it here: https://joro.io/downloads. Note: if you have the previous version installed, you will need to run the uninstaller first (included in the dmg.)
Let me know how you get on!

Today I transliterated Animal Farm on my cellphone. (Here’s a read-only version of that project - you cannot make edits of your own, but you can download the resulting ebook. Disclaimer: I haven’t actually proofread it yet!)

For those who haven't been following along, I’ve been working on an advanced shavian transliteration tool for quite some time now. Here, at long last, is a web-ui front-end. It includes my e-book conversion and proof-reading tool (only EPub for now - but you can use the results with most modern ebook readers). There are still kinks to iron out, but I'm pretty pleased with the results, and couldn't wait to share it with everybody!
