Rental company charging me for fuel tank damage not sure if I’m liable.

I need some advice on a situation with a rental car company.

We rented a Geely (2024 model) about a month ago. A week later the car went in for servicing and was returned to us.

About 1.5 weeks later, we drove from Abu Dhabi to Dubai Mall. When we returned to the car, there was a strong petrol smell and a security guard/cleaner was spraying water around it. We then discovered fuel was leaking heavily from the petrol tank and the fuel gauge had dropped from half tank to empty.

We immediately contacted the rental company, and they told us to get a police report and send the car back to Abu Dhabi airport since the branch was closed.

At the airport, an inspection staff member suggested the damage was caused by a speed hump and a screw had fallen from underneath the fuel tank. This didn’t make sense to us as we drove normally and didn’t hit anything.

Later, I asked the operations team to contact me when the car went to the workshop for inspection, but I was not informed. Today we received a bill (~AED 2,300) for replacement of the fuel tank, fuel pump, and labour.

When I asked what caused the damage, I was told it was a “stone chip.”

I also found that the same Geely model (2024–2025) has had reported fuel system issues/recalls online.

What concerns me:
We were given multiple different explanations (speed hump / stone chip / fuel system issue)
No clear evidence was shown with the vehicle lifted
My own photos show no visible external scratches or chip damages
The issue happened suddenly while parked

The rental company says we are responsible for the damage. I’m not sure if this is fair or if I should be pushing back further.
