I'm already kind of chuckling about how wild this shit would be but bear with me on a few limitations of a voice comms option (sending a hail to one person) in game.
Ok first things first:
- People would have full ability to opt in/out, similar to turning off duel requests
- obviously couldnt be spammed. Timers.
- would need to be in same system, maybe even more limited to same grid. I dont know I just like proximity chats.
-cant use it to determine if someone is in a wormhole system or not (either doesnt work or gives no hint)
- probably would cost a lot for a separate voice server so I know this might be unfeasible. Among other reasons.
- probably is disabled in systems over x amount of people so it cant get abused by fleets too much.
I think every good sci-fi series has some form of one ship hailing another to have a conversation. I imagine scenarios where a couple people run into eachother unexpectedly and could have a quick chat.
Maybe its a ransom, maybe they decide to join forces to rob a skyhook, maybe they start barking wildly like a dog until the other ceases communication..
I do think local provides some of these opportunities already, but I think voice chat can provide a certain immersion/comedy/mind games that it misses.
I think my viewpoint is certainly skewed here as a creator, and much more towards the comedy that could come from this kind of implementation. Im not gonna kid you into this translating to just dedicated role players being courteous to eachother. It would be a shitshow. Just like local is.
I do think it could create some very interesting moments and we all like some good voice clips in storytelling. I think of some of the media that could exist when voice comms workout and the pull that might have for players wanting to interact in the sandbox.
Still very aware that people are shitty and its certainly another vector for someone to harass or be an asshole. Im my case as a streamer, it might actually be dangerous to open comms with anyone. Fortunately theres some leeway with making honest efforts to kill a tos breaching interaction.
I dunno gamers, let me know if something like this is the worst possible idea or if there's a glint of some hilarious/wholesome media being made that could outweigh the negative. I know either way it would be entertaining.
