I found this little pigeon while walking
Hi! This is my first time posting here as I never found in this situation, and would like to take care of this little pigeon I found yestarday on the street.
Yesterday around sunset, while walking down the street, I found this little pigeon on the ground facing a door, completely still with its wings tucked in. I looked around to see if there was a nearby nest it could have fallen from, but I couldn’t find anything, so I decided to take it home.
I prepared a small box with towels for it. I tried feeding it a soft mixture made of water and crushed polenta, both in a small container and later using a modified syringe, but it never tried to eat on its own.
Today I searched for more information about what pigeons can eat (seeds, vegetables, etc.), but I would like more specific advice for this situation. I’m not sure if it refuses food because it is still technically a baby pigeon and doesn’t know how to eat by itself yet, if it is stressed, cold, or something else.
Last night I left the box partially covered with blankets to keep it warm. Today, after reading online that baby pigeons need warmth, I moved the box indoors where the temperature is warmer. The pigeon itself feels warm when I hold it, and its breathing seems calmer today than yesterday.
Its behavior also changed a bit. Yesterday it was very lethargic and barely moved, while today it seems slightly more active and curious. It has already climbed out of the box a few times.
I don’t have a heat lamp or heater, only blankets and towels for warmth.
Right now I have these possible food options available:
- Seeds: chia, sesame, golden flax
- Vegetables: carrots, cilantro
- Other: polenta, lentils, peanuts (salted, with skin)
Here a small video I made:

My questions are:
- Is this really a baby pigeon?
- Without a direct heat source, how can I keep it warm enough if needed?
- Should I monitor its temperature somehow?
- Could it be refusing food simply because it is too young to feed itself yet, or could something else be wrong?
- I want to try a feeding method I saw online using a cloth pouch with softened seeds and a small opening for the beak. Which of the foods I mentioned would actually be safe or appropriate to use?
- Any other recommendations would be appreciated.
Thank you very much.
