Logan's "feelings" for Hannah

What feels more realistic to me—and what I think the show is going to do—is position Logan’s feelings for Hannah as another extension of him wanting what Garrett has.

In the books, Logan’s crush is framed as him longing for the kind of love Garrett and Hannah have, but honestly, that explanation never fully worked for me. It always felt a little forced and unrealistic. The show’s setup actually creates a much more believable dynamic.

We already know that Logan has been aware of Hannah since freshman year, when he fixed her car. That means he had two full years to ask her out and never did. To me, that suggests Hannah wasn’t some deep, lingering crush. She was more like “the cute girl whose car I fixed” and later “the cute waitress at Malone’s.” Someone he noticed, sure, but not someone he actively pursued.

I think things change once Garrett starts showing genuine interest in her.

A huge part of Logan’s character is the buried resentment he carries toward Garrett. They love each other and are best friends, but I think show Logan tends to get lost in the comparison game. Garrett grew up privileged, has had every opportunity, and already gets attention in ways Logan feels he has to work ten times harder for—especially in hockey. That insecurity is a major part of their friendship dynamic.

So when Garrett suddenly has the attention of the girl Logan always thought was cute, I can easily see Logan subconsciously adding that to the list of things Garrett has that he wants too.

From there, I think Logan starts projecting more meaning onto his feelings for Hannah. The competition and comparison with Garrett magnetize those feelings and make them seem deeper and more intense than they originally were. And because Hannah is suddenly around more, he probably does begin to genuinely like her as a person over time after getting to know her better.

That interpretation just feels far more believable to me than Logan being in love with the idea of Hannah and Garrett’s relationship. It makes his feelings less about Hannah herself and more about his complicated friendship with Garrett, his insecurities, and his own self-comparison to him.
