Coles Online Idea
Hey everyone,
I work in a busy Coles store doing online shopping. One of the biggest bottlenecks in our workflow is the login process.
As fellow team members know, we have to enter a PIN to log in. The issue is that the app logs us out after every completed pick, so during a shift we end up re-entering our PIN constantly — easily 50+ times in a busy period.
It slows down picking flow and becomes frustrating when you’re trying to keep pace during peak hours.
I had an idea and wanted to get feedback on whether this is even something worth proposing to management/IT:
Idea
A barcode or QR-based login system, similar to what service departments or warehouse systems use.
For example:
- Each staff member is assigned a unique QR/barcode
- The tablet scanner could scan it instead of manually entering a PIN
- It would act as a quick authentication method to reduce repeated typing
I know ROVER is likely locked down for security reasons, but from a workflow perspective it feels like there must be a better solution than constant manual PIN entry on shared devices.
Questions:
- Is something like this even realistic in enterprise systems like Coles/ROVER?
- Would IT/security ever consider QR-based login for speed if it’s still tied to staff credentials?
- What would be the proper way to propose this without it getting shut down immediately as a “security risk idea”?
I’m mainly trying to improve efficiency during picking because right now the repeated logins are becoming a real slowdown for the team.
Would appreciate any insight from people who’ve worked with retail systems, IT, or similar scanning workflows.
