I’ve been on Mounjaro 2.5 mg for 12 weeks now and wanted to get some input before my doctor’s appointment tomorrow.
So far, I’ve lost 8.4 kg total:
- Month 1: 3.5 kg
- Month 2: 2.7 kg
- Month 3: 2.2 kg
Things have been going really well, appetite control is strong, and I’m seeing steady progress week to week.
My doctor had mentioned last month that we’d likely move up for month 4, so I’m expecting a jump to 5 mg. Before that, I had a couple of questions for people with more experience:
1. “5th dose” / extracting leftover medication
With my first two pens, I just used 4 doses and discarded the rest. Now with my third pen, I’m considering extracting the leftover “5th dose” using a syringe (0.6 ml) and injecting.
I know this goes against manufacturer guidance, but it’s effectively ~20% cost savings per pen. I’ve practiced with old pens just to understand the process.
For those who do this:
- Do you consistently get a usable dose?
- Any issues with effectiveness or side effects?
- Is it worth the effort/risk in your experience?
2. Moving up to 5 mg vs gradual increase
Since 2.5 mg has been working really well for me, I’m wondering if jumping straight to 5 mg is necessary.
Has anyone tried something like using a 5 mg pen but taking a partial dose (for example ~3.75 mg using 45 clicks) before fully moving up?
My thinking is:
- Stay on the lowest effective dose as long as possible
- Minimize side effects
- Keep higher doses (and costs) for later
- Ideally not go beyond 7.5 mg long-term
Would love to hear if anyone has taken a more gradual titration approach like this and how it worked out.
Appreciate any insights!
