Does the "hard" night guard material really matter?

After being badgered by the hygienist to wear a night guard for over a year, and not wanting to spend $600 at the dentist, I purchased a 1mm hard custom night guard online. I've been wearing it for a year.

Yesterday at the dentist, she seemed unimpressed, asking if I was wearing a night guard yet. I believe I have early signs of bone loss on a bottom right tooth she thinks is from clenching/grinding (age 50/female). I told her I was wearing a custom hard night guard.

She said it had to be very hard, with no flexibility, insinuating that online companies do not use the proper materials, causing the night guard to have "flex" to it. She said I need one firm to prevent my jaw from shifting? When I got home, I do see that mine does have some bend to it.

Looking online, it seems there are different types of plastics used. Will this make a difference in flex, and does this really matter? What should I look for in an online company (if one exists) that can get me what I need?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
