What am I supposed to do research on?

I'm a rising sophomore in college. I enjoy pathology and immunology so much. When I hear a bacterium or a virus, I get so excited and my heart rate goes up. So I joined a lab, and this summer I will be doing research on a bacterium (I won't specify here) and gut microbiome. However, I go to a pretty strong premed school, and, for some reason, I'm the only person I know that is working with a specific disease or a pathogen. All other people are involved in cell biology, genetics, or some neuroscience, not really anything with pathogens. (At least not that I know)

Is this okay? Like I'm just doing what I find joy in, but if this won't be helpful for my med school application obviously I will switch out... does this have to do with how easy it is to get publications in different fields? I would appreciate any comment.
