Slow Burn/Romance Plot Help

Hi! I've been writing a "slow burn" for quite some time now and ended up in a place that I really wasn't expecting, despite things being outlined. I've seen the memes saying that characters surprise you, and well, here I am...

I'm reaching out here to see if anyone is possibly available to bounce a few ideas around? I guess it would be a beta situation, but more idea sharing than any real reading. I'd love to talk to someone who either has experience writing a slow burn or someone who often reads them. My fandom is JJK, but I'm not entirely sure that it matters for this, given the nature of my question, as long as you'd maybe be willing to listen to a small rant about one of the canon characters to explain personality traits (and why it makes things complicated).

The fic is rated mature and has suggestive themes, but no sexually explicit content. The rating is honestly more for non-romance-related content than anything else.

If anyone is open to help, please let me know either here or through pm!

New Crack Fic... - JJK

I have started writing something terribly stupid. Please, enjoy if you would like. (It's literally framed as a research paper...so, if that's not your thing, then maybe don't? 😂) Feel free to let me know what you think.

Title: Infinite Void, Empty Mind: A Study of Satoru's Impact on My Life Expectancy

Rating: Teen and Up

Warnings: Mild language, possibly dark humor, heavy Gojo slander just for the fun of it (it's out of love, I promise)

Pairing: Gojo Satoru & Geto Suguru & Ieiri Shoko (Yay friends!)

Genre: Gen; Crack; Track treated mildly seriously, Really dumb humor

Summary: (Fic and summary from the POV of Suguru)

Test Subject: Gojo Satoru

Researcher: Geto Suguru "The Best Friend"

Gojo Satoru is said to be the pinnacle of the Jujutsu world.

I disagree.

He's a walking migraine, a public nuisance, and the primary reason for my high blood pressure. As the man tasked with single-handedly keeping him from dismantling society, I have begun to compile a detailed log of every idiotic, property-damaging, and questionably illegal thing he does. This document shall serve as a longitudinal study of the long-term impact of his most prominent trait: being an idiot, on the lifespan of this researcher (Geto S.).

Peer-reviewed by Ieiri Shoko

OR

Suguru has decided that being friends with "The Honored One" can, oftentimes, be much more than just a headache. In order to legally protect himself, and just for the sheer hell of it, he has decided to create a website featuring a long-term study on the daily antics of the menace that we affectionately refer to as Gojo Satoru. Although his journal may not be particularly professional, he will be sure to include mostly unbiased empirical data.

Multiple WIPs a Turn-Off?

I am one of those writers who works on basically 8 different works at a time. I just get so many ideas that I get excited about, and I want to start them and see where they go. Blame the ADHD or the short attention span, but either way, that's how it goes.

Despite having about 5 WIPs going on, only 3 of them are fully developed, and 2 are posted. One of my WIPs is a 70k long fic that I've been consistently updating for months. This is the one that I tend to prioritize writing or updating since I'm already so far in and have a lot of it mapped out. The second one is a short crack fic that is not yet complete, but I'm working on it. This one is honestly very difficult for me to write. I don't know why that is, but due to that, I'm much slower to update despite it actually being my most popular work. It was honestly supposed to be a one-shot, but I'm not great at wrapping up so quickly, so it's a few chapters long now.

The dilemma:

I was debating on posting another crack fic that I'm actually very excited about. I wouldn't promise frequent updates, and honestly, it doesn't really have a cohesive storyline (it's really hard to explain vaguely, but I promise it makes sense), so I guess it can effectively be considered a paired set of one-shots.

I wanted to know, as readers, is it a "turn-off" for you to see that the author has multiple unfinished works on their page? And authors, is there a way that you let readers know that you will, in fact, finish them in a "timely" manner? I'm at a super busy point in my life, so I honestly just write when I can, but due to that, I'm trying to just write whichever fic brings me the most joy on that day. I've seen a few authors put "Updating" or other statuses in the summary, but I really didn't know if that was necessary or helped at all. I do not plan to, nor do I think I am physically capable of abandoning a work.

Is it Gen?

Hello! I’m writing a crack fic based around friend A observing the totally off the wall actions of friend B. The story will be told from the perspective of friend A and jump around to them watching different scenarios that character B is in.

My question is: friend B is canonically very flirty, so there will likely be some scenarios where they are humorously flirting and friend A is watching. Since the main storyline of the fic isn’t about/revolving around a relationship, would it still be considered gen?

Edit: I’m asking because I wrote a one-shot one time with this same character, and there was no relationship and it wasn’t intended to be anything, so I marked it as gen and some people still got upset about it 🙃

JJK Fics - Self-Promo, Building Connections, Seeking Recs

Hi! I currently only write for the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom on AO3. I'd like to use this post both as a self-promo and because I haven't seen a ton of writers around subreddits for this fandom (although I know they're there👀) , so it'd be cool if others would like to share here as well (your work or recs), as I could always use more fics to read and form connections (I'm open to other characters and all ships, although you'll see a pattern in my works). Aside from that, if you're interested in joining a new fandom, some of my fics can be fandom-blind read, and if you like them, maybe you could be convinced to join the dark side... I heavily write a lot of banter, so you can expect that in all of these, no matter the overall genre.

So here we go!

My current long-fic and most recent update:

Title+Link: When Infinity Falters (23ch/77K word WIP)

Rating+Pairing: Mature; Gojo/FemaleOC

Genre: Idiots in love, strangers/annoyances to friends to lovers, hurt/comfort, angst/fluff

Summary:

For Sora, life is a series of dull moments and predictable routines. It's boring, sure, but it's safe. She convinced herself she was fine with the solitude, but sometimes she wishes something interesting would happen, like a stray cat following her home. This was by no means an invitation for life to play a cruel joke and drop Gojo Satoru into her lap. He didn't just casually walk into her candy shop; he crashed into her life with a cocky grin and a personality too big for a Tuesday afternoon.

Gojo Satoru is used to getting everything he wants. He's the life of every party, the strongest sorcerer alive, and clearly the best thing to happen to the world in the past two decades. It turns out, his greatest opponent isn't a curse; it's a prickly girl in an apron who treats him like an annoying fly rather than a gift from the gods. He's decided that her annoyance is affection in disguise, and he's happy to play the pest until she admits to liking his chaos.

As days passed and insults began to taste like endearment, the shadows following him started to close in. They know something about Sora that she hasn't yet seen in herself, and they plan on weaponizing it to bring "The Strongest" to his knees.

A/N: This fic is my baby. I've done the most research for it and obviously poured the most time into it. It reads fandom blind through most of it because the OC is getting introduced to the world as well, but there are several easter eggs if you're in fandom. I like the later chapters more, but it's already long.

Despite the above being my mini project, the readers of AO3 work in mysterious ways, and my most popular fic is:

Title+Link: The Honored One (Has Paws?) (3ch/7.4K WIP)

Rating+Pairing: Teen and Up; Gojo/Utahime

Genre: Enemies to Lovers (When he's not a cat), Crack/Crack taken seriously, slice of life

Summary:

Throughout heaven and earth, he alone is the fluffy one.

Gojo Satoru has always been a pest, but as a cat, he's a literal terror. He has always had too much to say, and Utahime has always had too little patience. When a curse replaces Gojo's voice with a set of whiskers and soft white paws, Yaga assigns Utahime the task of protecting the Persian menace. Gojo's decided that the best way to spend his nine lives is by ruining Utahime's, one broken dish at a time.

Between demanding premium tuna and naps in her lap, who knew it would take a language barrier for them to learn to communicate? A few purrs and head scratches later, and she'll be head over heels for her new fluffy friend. Hopefully, he's still as good a listener once the curse wears off.

(All of the dishes were harmed in the making of this fic)

A/N: A bit more difficult to be fandom-blind read

Finally, I have a series of silly teen one-shots that can be read together, but don't have to, centered around Gojo and Geto's friendship in high school. (Yes, I shamelessly write a lot of Gojo...) Also, fandom-blind friendly!

Thanks if you read this far! Please share your work as well if anyone in here is also in fandom as a writer, has recs as a reader, or even if you read out of fandom and have thoughts. Thoughts are always welcome! I'd love to hear them.
