Anyone actually using battery for fridge backup during outages?

Newbie here. We had a 14 hour outage in Asheville two weeks back and lost around $200 of food. Not catastrophic, but it made me realize we have zero plan and I'd rather not figure this out during a 3 day outage .

A generator is off the table for us (HOA and I don't want to deal with fuel storage), so I've been looking at battery backups. I've been checking out a few options(Bluetti/Anker/EcoFlow). But I'm still torn on which one to actually pull the trigger on. I'd really rather hear from any advice before spending that kind of money.

Power Outage Fridge Survival Guide

Lost about $300 worth of food last summer when we had a 20-hour outage. Did a ton of research afterward so it doesn't happen again. Sharing what actually works:
The fridge clock starts at 4 hours. FDA says anything perishable is at risk after that. Freezer gives you 48 hours if you don't open it. Most people don't know this until it's too late.

What helps before/during an outage:

  1. Fill empty freezer space with jugs of water. Frozen mass slows down temperature rise significantly. This alone can buy you hours.

  2. Turn your fridge down to 34°F and freezer to -4°F a day before if you know a storm is coming. Lower starting temp = more buffer time.

  3. Stop opening the door. Every time you open it, you drop the internal temp by several degrees. Decide what you need before you reach in.

  4. Move the most perishable stuff (meat, dairy) into a cooler with ice if you hit hour 3 with no power in sight.

  5. The long-term fix: get a dedicated backup power unit for your fridge. I looked into a few options like ecoflow or jackery, but bluetti fridgepower was the only one that actually felt like a kitchen appliance, it just sits on top and blends in.

Just a dude who spent way too long on Google looking for a way to save my fridge without turning my kitchen into a construction zone. Stay safe out there.
