Local Life in Local Japan

I never get tired of visiting the local castles around the countryside of this beautiful country. Bonus points when they have a mini-truck parked out front!

This photo is from last week at Gassanhiwa Castle near Miyakonojo. I learned from the museum there that it was a very important tower during the back-and-forth fighting for control of Kyushu between clans, though I suppose this is a similar story for most castles in Japan..

Anyway, very local and very much worth the visit!

What is a general bench marker to feel like your blog is performing well?

I’ve started doing some travel blogging (mostly just for my own creative outlet and memory-keeping) and it is my very first dip into blogging, ever. I’m just curious what kind of view counts you more experienced folks consider to be a successful blog?

My situation is a bit different because I’m posting mine in a site I built for others to also post some blogs in. I am also, like I said, mostly just writing for myself. But I can’t help but wonder about what the standards are for a “successful” text-and-photo (travel) blog anyway?

Any insight appreciated as I am TOTALLY new to this.

Achievement: visited 77/77 provinces in Thailand!

Hi all,

Just wanted to share an achievement that I’m really proud of - this year I finally visited all 77 provinces in Thailand! It took me a few years and I spent time teaching English there as well as time just being a tourist.

Mostly used public transportation to get around but a few road trips with local friends (some via public transportation, some view private car) really helped me in some difficult-to-get-around places.

My favorite provinces tended to be those frequented by Thai tourists- beautiful places like Nan, Loei, Songkhla, Chumphon. I also really love the warm friendliness of all of those Isan provinces - Yasothon, Surin, Sakon Nakhon.. they’re all great!

I just feel excited about this and love Thailand so much - I thought maybe some folks in this group might feel the same! 😎

New to travel blogging. Would love some feedback!

Hello all,

I have traveled abroad from USA for many years and have visited something like 85 countries now. I have always wanted to do a bit of writing about my travels but have never really considered trying to make money from it. Just want to create something and record some thoughts and memories.

I would love to get some community opinions on what looks good and what needs some work.

I am building the site that it’s on as well so I am flexible to make fixes to anything.

Where to next?

I’m soon to visit a few countries I’ve already been to (South Korea, Japan, and China) but I can’t help but wonder… which new country should I be visiting next?! Any recommendations on what is the #1 top country that my map is missing?! Thanks!
