Nasty wound on my dog's back leg

So yesterday we noticed a pretty nasty looking wound on our seven year old male goldendoodle's rear leg.

Photos here: https://imgur.com/a/NnwHHET (and see bottom for more general dog information)

He was gnawing at it and that is when I first saw it so I don't know when it started or how it looked before getting to this point. He does not seem to react to it with much pain, if any at all. We were able to apply some gentle ointment on it to clean it and he did not whine, yelp, or jump with any sudden strikes of pain or anything. He is not limping and his behavior or energy levels are all normal. He gets bathed monthly at PetSmart so we wondered if it is a hot spot from not drying properly but that has never happened before. We stay on top of brushing his coat to avoid matting. He hasn't had any kind of recent history of fleas or parasites, nor does he have any allergies we are aware of, nor do we feed him any kind of chicken infused dog food.

He does continue to gnaw at it so I will be putting a cone around his head tonight and tomorrow while I am at work when he is unsupervised.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

General Information:

Breed: Goldendoodle
Gender: Male
Age: 7 years
Location: southeast Louisiana

Environment: He is an inside dog at all times aside from just going in the backyard to go to the bathroom. We don't live in the woods or anything like that so there isn't a broad exposure to bugs or insects or spiders, but being in southeast Louisiana in the summer there can be stray ticks, spiders, etc but we have not seen anything.
