Some time ago there was a conversion of a cutta for the rebel grots made from a mekgun.. does anyone have a photo of this? ( it was in white dwarf)

During the various posts we’ve looked at many things, from Landmarks to leaders, and even a Virus.. but we need to look at Planet or Chiron more closely. At the end there will be an update on where this series will go.. please let me know if you have any preference
Chiron was the wisest of all Centaurs and we will look at potentially why planet was named after them later. Mythology does play some part into the various celestial bodies of the Alpha Centauri System, but most people refer to Chiron as ‘Planet’ .. now this next bit may not be true but there is a rumour that the mythology aspect was dropped, it can still be found.. kinda in a few quotes, but not much else.
So we will divide Planets history into 4 eras
But before we do we need to make a few educated guesses. Mostly to do with the Progenitors, how powerful were they? how powerful ARE they now?
The first era we will Call the pre Progenitor era…
First things first Did the Progenitors create Planet completely? Now in all the Lore we have nothing points to this, The Ancient Progenitors spanned multiple systems. They can travel the gulf of space, they can manipulate planets themselves, but nothing points to the Artificial Creation of Planets or planetoids themselves. So no Magretheia planet creation.
Second thing is what environment was present before the Progenitors Arrived and began the Manifold Experiment?
Short answer is we don’t know.
But that is not exactly the point of this post, we need to do more than just look blankly at what isn’t available, and look at what is available. We can use a few semi educated guesses looking at Earth as our template, and looking at how planet is when we find it in game and lore, and finally by using a bit of astronomy. Then we make an educated guess, it is still a guess tho, and it is more or less theory crafting and world building using existing data. If this bothers you this might not be the post for you.
Earth went through various Eras, to save a lot of science and data we are just going to jump to what state Planet was in. There is an old saying it’s better to work with what’s available, than build from scratch. The Progenitors bring a rather ( imo ) pragmatic people would do so
So what Do we know that was Potentially present on Planet? probably Fungi so Planet was probably post Paleozoic era, and going to even say that Trees were probably present ( or tree Analogues ) so again potentially post Carboniferous, Xeno Paleobotany and PaleoMycology is at best a Fringe Science at best and again it’s going to do a massive amount of of heavy lifting in this post. we call things trees because they probably look like them, as does the fungus that occupies the Planet, at some points in game it’s described as a sort of tubular, Coral type substance, Fungi is odd, it’s not a Plant or an animal, it’s a Strange third classification and one an alien Planet is probably even stranger than that. Planet Probably went through a Similar Continent formation that Earth did, but it’s possible that the Progenitors would utilise a super continent, it’s easier to just have everything based in one area. while it’s possible that continents were set before their arrival, it’s probably more likely that they drifted apart later.
So before the Arrival of the Progenitors what do we conclude? That there’s some kind of base plant life ( maybe even animal life ) that there’s possibly a super continent, and Planet is ripe for their experiment, it is stated that Planet was volcanically active at some point but it doesn’t say when, we know mount Planet is still active, but not how old it is, could it be the final remaining super Volcano? We will say for now that the volcanic activity has died down and planet Waits.
The Manifold Era
The Grand Experiment Begins.
The Manifold Experiment is largely shrouded in mystery, just what is it? Why did they do it? It’s never really answered completely, if you believe the Usurpers it’s to do with obtaining ‘Godhood’ Was this always the case? We don’t know.
as Brian himself told me there’s probably not any secret lore kicking around anywhere, there’s no equivalent of a ‘fallout bible’ so we are unfortunately or fortunately (for this series ) left to fill in the blanks
So the Progenitors arrive and they start building monoliths, and a formation of boreholes, the nexus, and the Ruins They start to manipulate Planet into a Manifold, they tinker with native life to make the Fungus into a neural network, and they manipulate the entire ecosystem system to support it ( while this is largely guess work, it’s plausible that they do put at least the groundwork into starting this process )
This process stops. Now we do know they Abandoned the Project due to one of the Manifolds either having some sort of psionic fit, or exploding that resulted in large scale damage or some sort of collective trauma that made the Progenitors abandon the project.
This caused them to withdraw from Chiron, and basically leave the project mid process, they didn’t shut it down, they didn’t dismantle it. They just left.
This possibly caused a multi factional civil war within the Progenitors, each with their own desires for the Manifolds, but this also caused their empire to decline and Chiron’s location to be lost during this time. They effectively entered a dark age
Important we don’t know what stage they left the experiment in, what state Planet was in, or even how long they stayed.
Third Era: Planet post Progenitors.
Planet Waits, alone in the cosmos, dormantish, but while the Progenitors fail to complete the Manifold, it seems that time does what they did not. Maybe evolution, maybe a dormant early Planet-mind but it completes enough of it so once the human colonists arrive it begins too awake, maybe enough was completed so the planet could complete the rest itself.
The continents set themselves, and 2 big impacts happened, one that forms the Freshwater sea, and another that forms the Garland Crater ultimately, planet twists and evolves alone, maybe under some guidance of the early sleeping planet mind, but maybe it’s simply coincidence. Maybe the Projenitors set something into motion before they left, but there’s no evidence either way.
What else happens? Well we get the spreading of the Fungus and mount Planet remains alone, but planet silently quietly progresses.. all the time.. perhaps patience was required and the Progenitors tried to rush the process ?
Fourth Era: The Awakening
It’s fairly safe to say that humanity arriving accelerated or at least made something happen.. in the beginning of its dreaming to consciousness Planet regards the humans in many ways. From something similar to an infection, to eventually an overgrowth that needs to be pruned, it is not happy that humans came. They dig, they hurt it’s fungus, it’s very brain, they kill it’s creatures, they shape planet to their whims, not its own
Planet does learn to tolerate them, but nothing can stop the planet from awakening, it is in essence a waking god whose meet birth into reality with merge every conscious being into itself, willing or not.. what this god will do or be is unknown ..
While some ending texts do give some clues ( such as the leader of the transcendence victory becoming the dominant mind within the new collective consciousness of the new god ) it is ultimately unclear what it wants beyond this.. does the victory merge the planet waking mind into itself? Or is it completely consumed by the dominant leaders mind? And what of those who don’t want to be part of the fungoid Borg? Well no escape for you it seems.
Now onto mythology..
Chiron is the son of a god whose meet birth abandons him out of disgust.. who then is brought up by Two other gods who teach him prophecy, music, archery and medicine.. put it this way while Chiron is the son of Chronos and a nypmh.. ( Philyra ). unlike other centaurs who are descended from Ixion
You can say that the Progenitors are like the gods abandoning planet, only to be raised in essence by itself then taught by Deirdre ( who basically becomes Apollo and Artemis to Planet )
( It then realises humanity is a poison ) in essence the Greek story states that Chiron gave up its immortality so Prometheus could be released from his torture he does this from an arrow dipped in a specific poison, while he is a god and can’t truly bide, Zeus grants him immortality in the Stars as a Constellation ( with some help from Hercules who feels bad as it’s his arrow )
Planet accepts the humans into itself it knows it’s going to be changed by them, but accepts them anyway it realises they are thinking living beings, it accepts the poison arrow so to speak. They both join together in Transcendence like becoming a constellation.
The only difference is really that Chiron is literally the mentor to basically every Greek hero, while basically being nothing like his brothers or even half brothers, he’s practically a pacifist who didn’t even sire offspring. Planet on the other hand really doesn’t mentor anyone it talks to them in their dreams a bit but it’s nothing like the tutelage Chiron of mythology does. It’s not even fully conscious at first.
Ok so from here what happens? Well there’s some fan fiction I can look at, but while I do have permission to from the Authors.. im not sure how to begin on those honestly.. so some guidance would be appreciated. And analysing them the way I have other things isn’t hard per say but.. let’s put it this way I don’t like the trilogy of books that are out there how they write certain characters… and that’s au Canon , and while I can remain impartial regardless.. it might take longer than I’d like.
Or I can do what would a base potentially look like for each faction ( with illustrations! ) or I can try to minor characters such as recon rover Rick
