Help please.
I need to get an opinion from a fellow nurse. My question is: should I stay or leave this nursing home?
I only have one day of orientation left, and I am scheduled to work the night shift. Here is the situation: I feel that my nursing license is in serious jeopardy at this facility due to the following issues:
There is no supervisor on duty during the night shift.
They have Foley catheters, but lack the necessary supplies to maintain a sterile field. There are no IV start kits, PICC line dressings are rarely changed, and there is almost no material available for wound care. Furthermore, they run out of ostomy supplies, even though patients with ostomies require changes every shift.
There are no non-rebreather masks readily available for emergencies; you have to go look for one in the crash cart and break the emergency seal to get it.
The CNA support is terrible.
Patient falls occur almost daily. During my last three days of orientation, there has been a fall on every single shift.
Worst of all, since routine lab processing is only done once a week, if a physician orders a STAT lab, the nurse is expected to personally transport the specimen to the hospital. I was completely stunned. When I question the training staff about these protocols, they do not even know the answers.
Should I resign? Thanks in advance.
Answer appreciated.
