Auditioning for an Amateur Orchestra
Hi /r/euphonium, as a high school senior I started playing the euphonium in my school's concert band; it's my first instrument. Before summer break, my music professor suggested I join his association's amateur orchestra (which is at an intermediate-advanced level), without much information, and auditions are a month away.
According to the website and the emails I've received, judges request two contrasting excerpts for the 15-minutes audition: one technical excerpt and one more lyrical excerpt. They also mentioned that a sight-reading test might be required – and that is an area where I’m very weak. Am I supposed to play solos or can I present orchestra arrangements where the euphonium holds the spotlight in certain parts?
Here are some Grade 3 scores I've played over the year:
- Critical Mass by Todd Stalter
- Selections from Disney's Moana by Lin-Manuel Miranda, arr. by Jay Bocook
In need of some advice and/or suggestions please! Thanks!
