[EU Blue Card]Opinions regarding AGL I & if I am eligible for it.
Hello, I already am aware that this is not a legal advice subreddit, and I am happy to just take opinions from any other workers who might be aware of a similar situation or could point something in my direction, I'll link the source of my information down below.
A) I entered Germany in September 2021 with a 16b residence permit, Section 1. I am NOT an EU citizen.
B) I completed my studies at a public university in 3.5 years, in March 2025. The language of instruction was English. During this time, I maintained the 16b residence permit and worked accordingly to the hours mentioned in odd jobs like restaurants.
C) I have been employed full-time since June 2025, initially I had to survive with the Fiktionsbescheinigung, but in November 2025 I was able to obtain the EU Blue Card. The designation on my EU Blue Card is “18G Abs. 1 S. 2 Nr. 2”
My employment contract expires on 01.12.2026 and I assume it will not be renewed. In this context, I have some concerns; I would be very grateful if someone could point me to the relevant guidelines.
How much time do I have to find a new job? I assume it has to be a position that matches my degree. The information on this is contradictory: The Blue Card remains valid for 3 months after my contract expiry, but I would obviously like to have more time. I know there is a type of residence permit I could apply for that grants me 18 months, such as “§ 20 Arbeitsplatzsuche im Anschluss an Aufenthalte im Bundesgebiet” but I’m unsure whether I meet the requirements for it, since most cities offer options like the one in the following example: https://www.freiburg.de/pb/-/205332/aufenthaltserlaubnis-zur-arbeitsplatzsuche-fuer-fachkraefte-beantragen/vbid6004943 Which only offers 6 months, I am unsure if this process is different city to city? Do I still qualify for it under the condition that I graduated with a degree from a german university?
Would it be possible for me to obtain a job-seeker’s permit, such as the 18-month permit mentioned above, AND receive unemployment benefits like ALG I at the same time? I am asking this question as a non-EU citizen. Although I have some savings, given the current state of the job market, I am concerned that I may need to rely on some form of financial assistance. Legally, I am not sure if AGL I counts as " social assistance " or if its just an insurance I paid into and it could now legally assist me.
- If I applied for citizenship, I fulfill all the requirements except having a " sustained form of income " if I were to lose my job, I mean I could work in a restaurant again, which would keep my rent, health insurance and food paid, I am wondering if this might invalidate the process as I am not working a full-time job? This is just side information that just would be helpful to know.
Sorry for the bothersome questions; I’m under a lot of stress right now and would be very grateful for any help. Thank you very much. My source: https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_aufenthg/englisch_aufenthg.html
