Necrotic Tonsil After Possible Mono Diagnosis?
Profile: 24M - 6'2, 190lbs, white, Canada
Visited a physician this past Friday with throat pain, fever, and what looks like tonsil stones; no cough or runny nose (basic tonsil stone/infection look). The doctor took a strep swab and provided amoxicillin to treat while waiting for results. Started taking the amoxicillin immediately.
Fast forward approx. 48 hours to Sunday, and symptoms are not getting any better. The top section of my tonsil (the white, black thing) was less inflamed, but purple and with white dots.
This being unexpected, I went back. The doctor said the strep came back negative, and since the meds weren't working, to stop the amoxicillin ASAP. Took another swab to be sure (negative again), and the doctor said it was most likely Mono or a viral equivalent (just got back from taking bloodwork to confirm) and that all I could do was pain management. He also asked I book an appt with him again next Sunday to review.
I mentioned the darkening colour and asked if I should be worried; he brushed it off quite quickly, so I dropped it (tonsil was purple with some white, as opposed to this photo where it's covered in white). He asked I stay home from school for the week and wrote me a note. My master's program is quite strict (if I miss 5 classes all semester I can't pass the course), so I informed my program office, asked for next steps, and went back to school anyway.
It's now Monday (today), and my throat looks like photo #1. Symptoms are manageable with constant lozenges, mouthwash, and advil/tylenol, but the shrivelling of my tonsil and its colour have me freaked out. I am currently back in my university town, so access to clinics is more difficult, and I'd feel silly going to emerg if this is nothing. Should I relax since the doctor didn't seem too worried unless symptoms worsen, or is this bad?
Thanks in advance <3
