I've had an old gents saw lying around for a while and decided to try my hand at converting it to a proper dovetail saw. Since I haven't done this before, I decided to use some scrap southern yellow pine and based the shape on a Veritas backsaw handle. It took a lot of time with files and rasps, but I've got the shape right and it's very comfortable in my hand.

Of course the handle snapped in half as I was adding the saw blade. I wasn't ready to commit to having this never be a gents saw again, so I left the tang intact on the brass back, and mirrored the original construction by drilling a hole into the handle, which drifted slightly and led to the whole blade being at an odd angle. I'll use the drill press next time.

It works fine overall. Even with the off kilter blade I prefer it over the original handle. That said, this isn't the final product. What can I improve on when I pull out the hardwoods?
