Almost done with Vol1 (audiobook) - Appraisal

While the complaints about Appraisal giving headaches are understandable, I don't get why both Protag and Katia complain about not being able to gain Proficiency from using the skill on the same thing.

Are they not aware of how many 'things' there are?

It's not as if they need to scan a new type of 'thing' - Protag got most of her levels by scanning the same types of monsters over and over again - and we know that the 'thing' in question can be any'thing' - Protag appraises both the walls and individual rocks when she first starts using the skill.

Descent of Fortune was BS

Why the fuck did they time locked this stupid minigame, and then added Clear Drops rewards to it? There was literally no reason to do this - it's literally just pressing red squares for a minute. If it was a multiplayer minigame, I could maybe see the argument (though the rest of the event was multiplayer and didn't have any limitations), but this didn't have any multiplayer elements whatsover.

"Scientology Speedruning" is a trend (mainly on Tiktok) where a gathering of masked teenagers rush into Scientology buildings and sprint in an attempt to get to the heighest floors. A typical run has the group enter the building, run inside until a large enough amount of followers intercept them, and then run back out, before uploading the footage online. this footage then gets seen by millions of people, including other runners, who figure out how to improve from the failures, and amateur map makers, who use the videos the map out the layout of the buildings.

The main problem with this trend, is that it isn't speedruning.

In a speedrun, you already know everything there is to know about the game, and your only goal is to execute the pre-existing plan in the fastest time and with the most accuracy. "Scientology Speedruns" actually have much more in common with Roguelikes. Runners do not know what's inside, and so don't try to actually reach the top right away - they first do reconesense. They start a run and fail, but gain new knowledge from it, just like in a Roguelike. Similarly, while the layout of the building doesn't change, the enemies and obstacles do.

If I had to compare it to one specific game though, it'd be the original Hello Neighbor. Like in Hello Neighbor's original version, you have a building that sticks to the same layout and you must break into to find out what the owner is hiding, and the owner evolves together with you to try and counteract your strat (like closing the doors on someone's aproach, or removing the handles).
