What does a day of eating look like for you on a long run day?

No judgement at all! I am genuinely curious.

Here’s mine

Breakfast 2 hrs before:

Oatmeal/granola/banana OR bagel/maple butter/banana, glass of milk

Intra-run: various candies, liquid IV

Lunch right after:

Sandwich (usually egg or canned fish), a large portion of fruit, Clif bar

(Today however it was just the sandwich and fruit, and a little later, 3/4 of a pint of gelato 🫣)

Dinner:

A rice/pasta dish, or a curry with bread, 2-4 dates

Snack/dessert:

Milk, handful of nuts, dark chocolate (sometimes a cookie or other sweet treat)

Edit: 60-70 km/week, 23+ km long runs

First marathon pace run, how to run more even splits?

I was supposed to do kms 8-20 at marathon pace. My goal marathon pace is 5:20, however since this was my first marathon pace run and I still have almost four months to train, I’m not too bothered about being a bit slower. However, I had to keep checking my watch and slowing down or speeding up, and even then my splits ended up being kinda uneven. I’ve always struggled with this, even while racing or during interval/tempo workouts. How do I work on being more even with my pace?

Those of you who don’t race in carbon-plated shoes, what are your race-day shoes?

I’m just not sure what to look for in a shoe if I’m not interested in a carbon plate one (goal 3:40 marathon so I don’t think it’d be useful to me).

How slow is too slow for long runs?

According to the Pfitz plan I’m following, long runs are supposed to be 10-20% slower than MP. My goal pace is 5:30/km, so that would mean long runs at 6:05-6:35. He also says that you should start at the slower end of the range at the beginning, and progress to the faster end by the end of the run.

However, I do my long runs with a club that is a bit slower, around 6:40/km. Is that too slow, and what happens if you do your long runs too slow?

Pfitz 18/55 plan - Why are recovery runs before long runs?

In this plan, the recovery runs are on Saturdays, while the long runs are on Sundays. I was originally planning to do my long runs on Saturdays because I wanted to run with my run club. Does the order of these runs really matter, like is the long run supposed to be run on tired legs? I did read the whole book but don’t recall Pfitz saying anything about the order of these runs and whether you can switch them. Any thoughts?

Am I ready for the Pfitz 18/55 plan? Or any other suggestions?

I‘ve been running 50-60 km/week for the past couple months, with long runs over 18k (most recent and longest one was 24k). I am targeting a 4 hr marathon this October, which I believe is a realistic goal considering I’m still relatively new to running (started last year in February). Is the Pfitz 18/55 plan (starts at 53k/33 miles and peaks at 89k/55 miles) realistic for me or too ambitious? Or do you have any other suggestions?

Another thing I wanted feedback on is my marathon time goal. Sometimes I feel like I’m underestimating my capabilities. My most recent long runs averaged very close to goal marathon pace (5:45-50/km vs goal pace of 5:41). Which makes me think maybe I can aim higher. What do you guys think?

Is Dollarama food really lower quality?

I never really considered Dollarama for groceries before, but I was in yesterday and noticed how drastically lower the food prices were! For example, I eat canned salmon almost every day as part of my lunch. It is almost $5 a can at Walmart and No Frills, but only $2.25 a can at Dollarama! Switching to Dollarama would therefore almost cut my lunch cost in half, but my friend says the Dollarama brands are much lower quality, is that true? What’s the catch with this price?

Is there something going on in Oshawa this weekend?

I’m visiting Oshawa this weekend and noticed that hotels are very expensive on those days compared to the surrounding dates, is there some event going on? I booked my hotel a few weeks ago, and have been watching hotel prices since then in case they go down, but they’ve just been going up…

Do you ever have those weeks where running feels so hard and miserable all of a sudden?

Paces that felt so easy last week feel impossible now. It’s so demotivating and makes me feel like I’ve lost all fitness, why does this happen?

For example, last week I ran 19 km at 5:42/km on a hilly route. Average HR was 147 bpm and it felt so fun and easy! This week, I ran 13 km at almost the same HR, but my pace was 6:18/km and it felt so difficult and miserable the whole time. I felt like the most out of shape person to exist, like it was my first time running. It makes no sense, I’ve been sleeping and eating well as I always do.

This has happened a few times in the past, and it has nothing to do with my menstrual cycle either. I just wish I knew the reason so I could address it, but I’ve been racking my brain for a possible cause and can’t come up with anything.

I've been looking forward to taking this course ever since I learned about it in my first year, it sounds like such a cool experience. I just submitted my application, is it hard to get approved? Does anyone have any experiences to share about the course itself?
