How to better handle my iPhone 6s

(Context) I’m dreaming of a jailbreak for my iPhone 12 mini. The problem is, it’ll likely be a long time before its security is cracked. Luckily, I have an iPhone 6s to enjoy in the meantime—it offers 1,000 times more freedom than my 12—though the 12 is 1,000 times more powerful than the 6s (plus, the 6s speakers are absolute garbage). The form factor quickly becomes unbearable if you aren't used to it, and plenty of apps are no longer compatible. So, I struggle to really enjoy using it, especially since I don't quite know what to do with it. I’ll turn it on, install a couple of tweaks, get bored, put it down, and go back to my 12. Please help me find a way to tolerate my 6s better for the sake of the jailbreak—and if necessary, help me find a daily use for it that I can actually enjoy. (For the record, I replaced my 6s with a 12 mini in late 2024.)

APFS volume corrupted and won't mount — 175 GB of data still detected

Hi everyone,

I have an external 1 TB SSD connected to my Mac. It contains an APFS volume named “SSD” with around 175 GB of data that I really need to recover.

Something went wrong while ejecting the drive. The SSD volume then stopped mounting.

Here is what Disk Utility / diskutil currently shows:

  • Physical external drive: 1 TB
  • APFS container containing the affected volume: 749 GB
  • Affected volume: SSD — 175.1 GB
  • The volume is still detected by macOS, but it is not mounted
  • diskutil mount readOnly disk5s1 fails

I also ran a verification:

diskutil verifyVolume disk5s1

It reports:

warning: (oid 0xf18c9) om: btn: invalid o_cksum
Object map is invalid

The volume /dev/rdisk5s1 ... was found to be corrupt and cannot be repaired

File system check exit code is 8
Error: -69845: File system verify or repair failed

I previously tried Disk Utility First Aid, which produced essentially the same result.

The important part is that macOS still reports:

APFS Volume SSD
Capacity Consumed: 175.1 GB
Mount Point: Not Mounted

So the volume definitely still exists and APFS still sees the data as occupying ~175 GB.

I have not erased or reformatted the volume.

I currently don't have another external drive available for recovery, so I am trying to figure out the safest next step before doing anything else.

What would you recommend?
Is there a safe way to recover the files from this APFS volume without modifying the original data?

Thanks!

Do not update your iPhone to iOS 27 beta 5 if you like to tinker.

If you like to hack iOS and you are on iOS 27 beta 4, then... DO NOT UPDATE YOUR IPHONE TO IOS 27. Already that for the moment I am not a super fan of this beta, it corrects all the interesting exploits for tinkering enthusiasts. Like for example the exploit of modifying the MobileGestalt file which allows you to have the Dynamic Island, Apple Intelligence and much more but which has unfortunately been patched. Same for Filza who seems to work only up to iOS 27 beta 4. And even Pocket Poster is not supported on a version higher than iOS 27 beta 4. After since the flaws are increasingly discovered by AI, you must not lose hope but if you want to test these exploits, avoid updating to beta 5.
