IG vet recs NJ/NYC area
Hi all! Looking for recommendations for a vet/dermatologist experienced with Italian Greyhounds (preferably in NJ/NYC area, we are currently in Westfield and our vet is located in Cranford but open to anywhere worth the drive)
My IG has been struggling with ongoing skin and ear issues and we are going in circles trying temporary fixes. She is four years old and has had a few ear infections and dry skin in the colder months over the past few years but it has gotten much worse. Unsure if these issues are all related but wanted to include what she’s been experiencing
Current issues:
Recurring ear infections
Extremely dry, flaky skin
Hair loss/thinning coat. Mainly the top of her head, ears, and down her back but overall hair thinning across her whole body.
Things we’ve tried so far:
Medicated shampoo
Gentle oatmeal wash
Coconut oil for skin
Ear wash/cleaners
Ear drops + ointment
Antibiotics
2 rounds of steroids for the ear infection
The steroids seemed to help temporarily with the ears, but her skin flaking seemed even worse afterward.
Diet-wise, she’s currently on a strict no-poultry diet (beef & pork only) plus pure salmon oil added to her food. Only human food she gets are blueberries and occasionally IG safe raw veggies.
Our vet is great but as we know, Italian greyhounds are such a sensitive + special breed and I am not sure they have a ton of knowledge on them. At this point I’d really love to find someone who specializes in either dermatology or Italian Greyhounds specifically and focuses on getting to the underlying cause instead of just treating flare-ups. I also wanted to note she does not seem to be bothered by these issues very much. When the ear infection gets bad she will paw at her ears but she is never itching her skin or chewing at her paws/ anywhere else. She is very happy and healthy otherwise but I still feel terrible!! If anyone has recommendations or has dealt with something similar with their IG, I’d really appreciate it.
