Mapping the ancient World - long-term project
I’m starting a long-term project—and I’m looking for people who want to build something genuinely ambitious together.
To be clear we need to build everything from the ground up! How to work and which tool to use at the end! How we work together! Nothing is done yet!
Discord: https://discord.gg/eyKv4cRnk
The goal:
Create a high-quality, fully structured map of the ancient world using KMZ files (Google Maps / Google Earth).
Not a collection of random pins.
Not another half-finished hobby project.
But a systematic, clean, and actually usable map where every known site—cities, ruins, buildings, roads—is properly mapped and documented.
What makes this different:
- Standardized tagging system (consistent data across the entire map)
- Clear categorization (temples, settlements, roads, fortifications, etc.)
- Verified sources wherever possible
- Expandable structure designed for long-term growth
- Potential to become a public interactive map
The problem right now:
Everything that exists is either:
- Incomplete
- Messy
- Inconsistent
- Or abandoned
So instead of complaining—I want to build it properly.
Who I’m looking for:
People interested in:
- Ancient history (any region)
- Mapping / GIS / Google Earth
- Research and data organization
- Building something long-term
How we’ll work:
- Organize via Discord
- Define standards first
- Split regions (Rome, Greece, Egypt, Mesopotamia, etc.)
- Build it piece by piece
Reality check:
This is a big project. It won’t be finished in a week.
But done right, it could become something seriously valuable.
If that sounds interesting, comment or DM me—I’ll send you the Discord link.
Let’s build something that doesn’t suck for once.
