Bypassing JioFiber with an OpenWrt IDU — is VSOL V2802RH the best bridge ONU, or is there a better option?
Hey everyone,
I'm setting up a 2-box network to replace the stock JioFiber gateway:
Router: Jio IDU flashed with OpenWrt (Wi-Fi 6, SQM/Cake, WireGuard, custom DNS).
Optical Bridge: Standalone GPON/XPON ONU running strictly in dumb bridge mode.
Right now, the most recommended bridge ONU seems to be the VSOL V2802RH (₹3,200). It runs on the Realtek RTL9601D platform, has a 2.5GbE LAN port, and allows configuring GPON SN, Vendor ID, Equipment ID, and OMCI parameters via web/Telnet to hit state O5.
Before pulling the trigger on the VSOL, I want to know:
- Is there anything better or more reliable than the VSOL V2802RH for Jio?
Are there better-documented standalone bridge ONUs available in India (e.g., from Netlink, Syrotech, C-Data, or Huawei like the HG8010H/HG8310M) that link up cleaner to Jio's Nokia/Huawei/Radisys OLTs?
Does anyone prefer using an SFP ONU stick (like the ODI Realtek DFP-34X-2C2 / DFP-34G-2C2) via an SFP-to-Ethernet media converter, or is that unnecessary complexity/heat compared to a standalone box?
- VSOL V2802RH real-world quirks on Jio:
Connector type: Most Indian VSOL units come with SC/UPC (blue) ports. Did you use an SC/APC (green) to SC/UPC patch cable/adapter to avoid optical reflection issues on Jio's APC plant?
VLAN tagging: Does the VSOL reliably pass VLAN 2907 (or transparent trunking) straight to the OpenWrt WAN port, or does the firmware force you to un-tag on the ONU itself?
Firmware versions: Any specific firmware revision (v1.1.5 vs v1.1.7+) needed to avoid OMCI negotiation or PPPoE/DHCP timeout issues?
If you have bypassed JioFiber with a standalone bridge ONU, what hardware are you running, and would you pick the VSOL again?
Thanks!
