Suzhou is one of the most underrated cities in China.
It has this rare combination of classical Jiangnan water-town scenery, canals, gardens, stone bridges, and a surprisingly modern skyline with skyscrapers and commercial districts. The contrast is honestly beautiful.
A lot of Western tourists seem to see Suzhou as just a small town next to Shanghai, but historically Suzhou was one of the most important cities in the region long before Shanghai became a global metropolis.
What many people also don’t realize is that Suzhou is not just a tourist city. It is also one of the world’s biggest industrial cities by industrial output, with a massive advanced manufacturing base. In many ways, Suzhou feels like a city where old China, modern China, and industrial China coexist very naturally.
