Struggling with Anytype sync across networks—how are you managing seamless sync?

I really love Anytype's overall design and privacy-first approach—in many ways, it feels much faster and more flexible than Notion. However, the sync experience has been quite frustrating for me, and I’m hoping to get some advice from the community.

Currently, sync only seems to work reliably when my devices are on the exact same local network (LAN/Wi-Fi). Even then, I frequently run into sync delays or outright failures. Whenever I am away from home or switching networks, keeping my data up to date across devices becomes really inconvenient.

A few questions for those who have a smooth workflow:

  • Remote sync: Is using the official Anytype backup node sufficient for seamless multi-device sync outside LAN, or is self-hosting a backup node (or using tools like Tailscale/VPN) necessary?
  • Troubleshooting: Are there specific settings, network permissions, or known quirks I should check to prevent sync from getting stuck?
  • Best practices: What does your daily sync routine look like to avoid conflicts and ensure changes push through across mobile and desktop?

I really want to stick with Anytype, but reliable cross-device syncing is essential. Any tips or setups that worked for you would be greatly appreciated!

Struggling to get shortlisted for UK Lectureships in STEM (Biomaterials) despite strong metrics (4k citations, 50+ papers) — What am I missing?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some realistic advice and perspective on the UK academic job market (specifically for Lecturer / Assistant Professor level positions in STEM / Bioengineering / Biomaterials).

Despite having solid publication and citation numbers, I am rarely making it to the shortlist/interview stage, and I'm trying to figure out where the disconnect might be.

My profile:

- Field: Biomaterials / Bioengineering

- Track record: 50+ papers, ~4,000 Google Scholar citations (predominantly first/corresponding author outputs across my career)

-Prior Academic Position (Faculty/Lecturer level): 5 years outside the UK (led independent research, secured local funding, supervised postgraduates, and delivered core lectures)

- UK experience: 3 years as a Postdoc scientist at a UK university

- Background: PhD/undergrad outside the UK (no UK degrees)

Where I could use some insight:

  1. Application & Scoring Process: How heavily are criteria weighted beyond raw metrics (e.g., prior UK grant capture, formal UK teaching accreditation like AFHEA/FHEA, or strictly matching the Person Specification matrix)?
  2. Research Vision vs. Teaching Balance: For permanent Lecturer posts, are committees filtering more aggressively based on exact teaching fit or departmental REF strategy rather than raw research output?
  3. Non-UK Background: Does having a PhD from outside the UK still act as an implicit barrier, even with multiple years of UK postdoc experience?
  4. Tailoring Strategy: What are the most common blind spots for international postdocs applying to UK academic roles?

Any honest feedback or insights from current UK faculty/panel members would be greatly appreciated!

What is the best AI plugin for Zotero with OpenAI / custom API key support?

I'm looking for a solid AI plugin for Zotero that allows you to connect your own OpenAI API key (or account).

What are you currently using, and what has your experience been like? Any recommendations or pros/cons for specific plugins would be greatly appreciated!
