Won’t settle back into his crib

We dropped to one nap a couple weeks ago and I think we have figured out the ideal schedule, but maybe there is something still amiss?

He will have a couple good nights sleeping through the night in his crib, occasionally having a wake up where he can settle himself within 5-10 minutes, but then every fourth or so night he struggles sooo much and I have to go in to hold him. He will fall asleep on me, but if I try to transfer him back to his crib he will wake up and scream. Nothing is different about his schedule on these days, so I have no idea what the problem is.

7 am wake, 11:30-1:30 nap, 8 pm bed

Little guy has always been a great sleeper, but we’ve had a couple rough patches. We sleep trained, and he did well with that.

He recently started struggling at night, really screaming, so I would go in to help him out. Usually, if I ever had to go in to assist, he would fall asleep in my arms and I could transfer him back to the crib, but now there’s 0 chance of that happening. I have resorted to co-sleeping after he struggles in the night because I need sleep.

I figured it might be time to drop to one nap, so we’ve been trying that out for about a week now, and he does well in the day, but the nights are still super hard.

We’ve been doing 4.5/5.5 ish, but it honestly varies day to day. We aim for 7 am wake up, 11:30 nap, and if he wakes up early we still aim for that time. He will nap 3 hours, and I will wake him, but he would probably sleep longer than that. Then we will do bed between 7:30-8.

He often wakes up screaming within 2 hours of bedtime, but we had two nights where he made it to 1 am before needing assistance.

I’m genuinely at a loss for what to do. Is he just wanting to co-sleep and that’s why he keeps waking? Is he overtired? Undertired? Teething? I DONT KNOW
