[QCrit] CLAIRVOYANT, Middle Grade/ Fantasy, 89k, third attempt
I have returned to try again! I’m so grateful to everyone who has taken the time to give me constructive criticism and helpful advice. I ultimately decided to age down my MC from fourteen to thirteen and am working on cutting down the length of my book. I wrote that it’s 89k words in the title but I’m aiming for 55-60k. I am also trying to find better comps as per recommendation, so I didn’t include that in this attempt. Thanks again for taking a look at this!
(Intro and comps)
Thirteen-year-old Frankie Carter always envisioned his future to look like this: standing behind a movie camera and writing scripts. If someone had told him that his future would consist of actually seeing the future, he would have laughed in their face. But since discovering that he has visions of the future during a family dinner, all that changes. While having superpowers should be insanely cool, it starts to attract the attention of someone who thinks his new abilities make him dangerous. Now, this person is hunting him with the strange belief that killing Frankie is going to save the world. As interesting a movie as that would make, Frankie didn’t sign up to be the protagonist.
So, when Frankie learns that there’s a man who can take away his abilities, he decides to embark on a journey to find him. Except there’s a slight problem-he’s locked in an elusive prison and can only be released using a special key. With the help of his best friend and three others, Frankie must find the key to free the prisoner and make his abilities disappear for good. And as his visions of himself in the future become increasingly unsettling, Frankie begins to wonder if he has to follow what fate has in store for him, or if he has the choice to decide what kind of person he wants to be.
