Khatep's campaign is vastly improved by patch 9.0
DJ Khatep, previously a kind of awkward campaign that puts you right in the middle of a bunch of unfavorable climate and asks you to go back to Nehekara to do the same victory conditions as the other Tomb Kings, even though your boss kicked you out and explicitly tells you to not come back...
Is now a streamlined experience thanks to the victory condition update in 9.0. While it's obvious not all factions received the same amount of care in 9.0 (DE rewards are still a massive joke, like +15% slave money for long victory really!? Lohkir getting that black ark build time reduction from 1 turn to 1 turn!?) someone surely spent time on crafting Khatep's victory conditions by hand.
The short victory guides you towards a specific path and can be achieved in ~20 turns if you follow that path. Everything you need is at most 2 provinces away south of the starting location, and the reward removes all climate penalty which solves his location issue entirely. Short victory is basically telling you that the on-rails tutorial is over, now go do whatever you want, which I think is awesome.
And then the long victory condition is just doing a bunch of crafting and leveling priests it really gives me vibes of doing Science Victory in civ games, you never need to worry about taking specific pyramids or ever setting foot in Nehekara, and the reward is global recruitment reduction which since tomb kings don't pay money for troops is a very powerful bonus. Also, somehow they don't pay upkeep for mercs and ally levies anymore? They are now one of the best users of ally recruitment.
Combined with the previous 6.3 TK update's new techs (immune to flanking for all characters, stacking wardsave on hierotitans, jeez) I highly recommend giving Khatep's campaign a try now that many of its previous pain points are solved with the new victory rewards.
