Subscription creep is a slow motion train wreck and I finally hit the wall

I usually consider myself pretty decent with my money. I track the big stuff, I contribute to my 401k, and I don't buy stupid gear I don't need. But I realized today that I have been a total sucker for the last four years. I was scrolling through my bank stement because I noticed my "miscellaneous" spending was creeping up for no reason, and I finally decided to look at every single line item instead of just glancing at the total. There it was. A monthly charge for $34.99 from some "premium" design asset site I used exactly once back in late 2020 for a freelance gig that lasted two weeks.

I honestly thought I canceled it. I remember clicking a button, but apparently, I didn't navigate through the six layers of "Are you sure?" prompts they hide in the settings. I have been paying thirty five bucks a month for forty eight months. That is nearly seventeen hundred dollars just evaporated into thin air for a login I havent used since the pandemic started. I could have bought a top-of-the-line laptop or a decent set of tires for that amount. Instead, I basically just handed a check to some corporate entity every month for the privilege of not using their service.

What makes it worse is the psychological hit. You feel like you have a handle on your life until you realize you are bleeding cash from a thousand tiny cuts. It is a zombie subscripton that just won't die because you are too lazy to read past the first five lines of your transaction history. I spent an hour today going through every other account I own, terrified I would find more. Found a five dollar "cloud storage" fee from an old phone and some "pro" weather app I dont even remember downloading.

The worst part was trying to cancel the main one today. The website made me "chat" with a bot that kept offering me three months free if I stayed. I had to click "No, I want to lose my benefits" about four times before it finally let me go. It is predatory as hell but honestly, it is on me for being blind. If you havent checked your actual line items in a while, do it tonight. It is depressing as hell but better than letting them keep winning. I am going to go sit in a dark room and think about that wasted seventeen hundred dollars now.
