Don’t turn around 👀

Don't turn around. Keep looking forward. If you look behind you, you'll see why we've been telling you not to. Did you hear that creak? That wasn't the house settling. It's getting closer. We know you heard it. Stop pretending you didn't. The space behind you isn't empty anymore. It hasn't been for a while. You keep checking the doors, but it's already inside. That's the funny part. You locked everything and still let it in. Listen. There. The breathing. Too slow to be yours. Too close to be someone else's. It likes when you notice it. That's why it's quiet most of the time. It's standing just outside your sight, waiting for you to make the mistake of looking. You think you're alone because every time you check, nothing is there. That's how it stays hidden. That's how it learns. Every night it gets a little closer. Every night it memorizes a little more of you. Did you really think that shadow in the corner moved by itself? Did you really think those footsteps stopped when you stopped listening? Keep telling yourself that. It enjoys that. It enjoys the moment people realize the sounds in the dark were never random. Don't blink. Seriously, don't blink. You won't lose it if you blink. You'll lose track of where it is. And right now, the only thing keeping you calm is that you still think it's across the room.
